Cedric The Entertainer Joins Tracy Morgan’s New Show On TBS Titled ‘The Last O.G.’!

Tracy Morgan’s upcoming TBS comedy series has been titled The Last O.G., and The Soul Man alum Cedric the Entertainer has joined the cast along with Taylor Mosby (Criminal Minds) and Dante Hoagland (The New Edition Story). The announcements are part of Turner’s upfront presentation today in Manhattan.

Jordan Peele and John Carcieri created The Last O.G., which stars Morgan as Tray, an ex-con who is shocked to see just how much the world has changed when he is released on good behavior from a 15-year prison stint. Returning to his newly gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood, he discovers that his former girlfriend, Shay (Tiffany Haddish), has married an affable, successful white man who is helping raise Tray’s twin sons who he never knew existed. Wanting nothing more than to connect with his kids, but having neither the money to support them nor himself, Tray falls back on the skills he learned in prison to make ends meet while treading unfamiliar territory.

Cedric the Entertainer will play Miniard Mullins, head of the halfway house where Tray comes to stay after prison. He thinks of himself as the pinnacle of charisma at the house. Mosby and Hoagland will portray Amira and Shahzad, Shay’s fraternal twins. They both physically resemble Tray but grew up in private schools and can’t relate to his hardscrabble upbringing. Tray is pretty certain that the twins are his — though Shay hasn’t admitted it yet.

The regular cast also includes Allen Maldonado and Ryan Gaul.

Peele and Carcieri executive produce the series alongside Morgan, Eric Tannebaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Joel Zadak. It is set to launch later this year.

But we have a feeling there’s one person who may not be laughing right now—we’re looking at you, Mr. Harvey! On Wednesday, an email was leaked to Robert Feder’s media blog, in which Harvey allegedly asked his staff to not enter his dressing room, approach him in the hallways or speak to him while getting his makeup done in an attempt to find “more free time for me throughout the day” and end “ambushing.””There will be no more meetings in my dressing room. No stopping by or popping in. NO ONE. Do not come into my dressing room unless invited,” he wrote.

Additionally, the stand up wrote, “Do not open my dressing room door. IF YOU OPEN MY DOOR, EXPECT TO BE REMOVED. My security team will stop everyone from standing at my door who have the intent to see or speak to me.”

TV One To Launch Live Streaming App This Year And Expanded Live Morning Programming

TV One LogoTV One Logo

As we reported on this blog a week ago, commemorating the 18th anniversary of its IPO (May 5, 2017), Radio One, Inc. (parent company of TV One, whose programming we cover aplenty here on S&A) changed its name to Urban One, Inc., Although its longstanding mission to inform, entertain and inspire the African American community, providing culturally relevant integrated content through its various brands and platforms, remains the same.

During a press conference call that was held on Thursday, May 11, 2017, Urban One executives Yashima White AziLove (U1 Corporate), D’Angela Proctor (TV One), Jay Stevens (Radio One and Reach Media), Kierna Mayo (iONE Digital), Tuwisha Rogers (One Solution and OneX Studios), Dwayne Whitaker (R1 Digital), Kim Bandell (One VIP) and Marveesha Frazier (BHM Digital), discussed the company’s name change and business outlook for the company overall, and at each of its individual subsidiaries, including TV One, which is of most interest to us at this time.

And from the conference call transcript received today (since I couldn’t participate at the time of the call), here are highlights from the TV One segment which was handled by D’Angela Proctor, Head of Original Programming at the cable TV network.

— Maybe the most significant announcement made is that a TV One streaming app will be launching later this year, that will include live streaming, viewing of TV One series episodes 24 hours after their initial airing, and access to the network’s library past content. Proctor doesn’t share specifics like cost of the app; of course I’m assuming it’ll be a standalone subscription app, and not one that still requires you to have a cable TV service to log into. The former would seem to be preferable especially as cord cutting becomes more of a thing.

— The network will expand Roland S. Martin’s “News One Now” to two hours, and also change its name to “Black America Today,” a daily news and lifestyle show airing weekdays from 7-9 a.m. ET. And a 3rd hour of live programming will be added to the morning lineup that will follow the new 2-hour “Black America Today” time block. Details on what this 3rd hour will contain aren’t shared, but Proctor says that a “soon-to-be-announced partnership for a live program” is coming. Maybe it’ll be something similar to morning talk shows like “The View,” “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” or “The Wendy Williams Show” and others.

— Expect more true crime and justice docu-series, which Proctor says have been “hugely successful” for the network (“Fatal Attraction” has been a standout, which she calls a “juggernaut” for TV One. In addition, there’s “For My Man,” etc); and so the true crime and justice block has been expanded to two nights, with more additions under that umbrella that will soon debut.

— And finally of note, Proctor closed her segment of the conference call with the following: “We’re looking forward to creating more videos that include behind the scenes, after shows, digital miniseries to go along with our television programs, and we hope to increase our footprint in the social media space as well.”

Three weeks ago, TV One unveiled its 2017/2018 programming slate during its annual upfronts presentation in NYC, which includes several new and returning shows, as well as original movies. They presented a hefty lineup of both scripted and unscripted programming, including original films on the DeBarge family and 1990s R&B quartet Xscape, and much more.

Leading worldwide sales and finance company The Exchange has acquired international sales rights to the SXSW 2017 selection “Tragedy Girls,” which stars Alexandra Shipp, Brianna Hildebrand, Craig Robinson (who is also a producer), Jack Quaid and Kevin Durand, in a film that’s described as a twist on the slasher genre which follows two budding teenage sociopaths who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small midwestern town into a frenzy, cementing their legacy as modern horror legends.

The horror-comedy feature, which made its world premiere in the “Midnighters” section of the 2017 SXSW Film Festival in March, was directed by Tyler MacIntyre, based on an original screenplay by Justin Olson.

He surprises everyone (including himself) when he has a natural knack for the job and slowly transforms City Hall.

Rounding out the starring cast are Yvette Nicole Brown, Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spears, Lea Michele, and David Spade.

Laff Mobb Lands New Series Titled ‘Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks’ On truTV

Building on that solid position, the network today announced additions to its programming slate, including new seasons of well-established existing series, all-new series launching this year, and select pilots and projects in development. First up, truTV announced the greenlight of Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks, a new series launching later this year that will provide a refreshing new take on traditional stand-up comedy. This new series joins four others debuting on truTV over the next year, including At Home with Amy Sedaris from the comedy icon, the comedic anthology series Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters, the scripted comedy I’m Sorry from Andrea Savage, and the recently-announced live call-in talk show The Chris Gethard Show.

In addition to these new series, truTV also announced today new season orders for existing originals Impractical Jokers, The Carbonaro Effect, and Jon Glaser Loves Gear, along with additional episode orders for Hack My Life, Comedy Knockout, and You Can Do Better. These renewals join current series Adam Ruins Everything, which debuts its second season this summer, Those Who Can’t, which returns for its third season this fall, and You Can Do Better to round out the network’s current slate of original programming debuting new episodes this year.

truTV also has a portfolio of projects currently in development, announcing today four new projects, including two scripted series – the Untitled Liza Treyger Project (wt) and Untitled Austin Martinez Comedy (wt) – as well as End Times Girls Club (wt) from Rose Schlossberg, Paid Off with Michael Torpey (wt), and False Advertising (wt) from The Kloons.

“Three years ago, when we announced our plan to totally reinvent truTV as a comedy network, people thought we were nuts and it would never work – but at least they were nice about it,” said Chris Linn, president of truTV. “Now, when we look at the quality and diversity in our programming slate and the talent we’re bringing to our network – not to mention the strong momentum and high engagement we’re building among our fans – we are incredibly proud of the work that’s been done and how far we’ve come in a short time. Not only have we completely changed the programming slate, but truTV has evolved into a distinct brand that appeals not only to a higher level of talent, but also to more premium audiences and advertisers.”

truTV underwent an extensive and well-documented rebrand that began in October 2014, and within the past year has solidified its position as the home for unique, creator-driven projects across a variety of scripted and unscripted formats. In late 2016, the network unveiled a new tag line – Funny because it’s tru – which cemented its comedic identity and showcased the network’s deep portfolio of talent and formats. In addition to consistent ratings growth in both prime and total day among adults 18-34 and adults 18-49, the network is delivering audiences that are younger (median age of 36) and more affluent than at any point in its history. The network’s engagement with its fan base is also at an all-time high, delivering more than 3 billion social impressions in 2016, and recording its best month ever with more than 94 million total video views across its social and digital platforms in January 2017 alone.

truTV was also the first network to announce its commitment to more content and in Q4 2016, it drastically reduced its commercial load across its prime premiere schedule. The result was not only a surge in networks across the landscape adopting this new practice, but also a significant increase in recall of advertisers’ messages and a meaningful sales lift that increased actual dollars spent by consumers. truTV remains committed to this initiative and in 2018 will substantially increase its limited-commercial load inventory to 15% across its total prime schedule.

Below is a complete rundown of truTV’s latest programming moves.

New truTV Pilots & Projects in Development:

Untitled Liza Treyger Project (wt) – Scripted Pilot

Recently seen in Louis CK’s Horace & Pete as well as her own half-hour stand up special, Liza Treyger executive produces and stars in this single camera, scripted pilot set in Chicago. Utilizing Treyger’s strong point of view, this character-driven project revolves around Liza and her dysfunctional friends who together form their own (somewhat) functional ‘framily’. Written by Treyger and Prescott Tolk, the project is produced by Avalon Television with Treyger, Sam Saifer, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner, David Martin, and Tolk serving as executive producers. Chloe Pisello is a co-executive producer.

Untitled Austin Martinez Comedy (wt) – Scripted Pilot

Molly Austin and Shamikah Martinez – also known as Austin Martinez – star in this scripted comedy pilot in which episodes spark from relatable conflicts and milestones of being an official adult – things like being the one in charge of an actual emergency, babysitting your friend’s kid, and getting your first grown ass woman couch. These relatable, everyday situations are taken to an absurd magical world that includes everything from music videos and sketches to talking cats and noir mysteries. The project is produced by MAD Pictures with Adam Donald, Martinez, and Austin serving as executive producers.

End Times Girls Club (wt) – Pilot

End Times Girls Club is your ultimate guide to apocalypse survival. Driven by her personal paranoia, Rose – played by creator and writer Rose Schlossberg – is here to educate girls on how to prepare for the end of the world and stay cute in the process! The hybrid comedy series is produced by Broadway Video with Schlossberg, Stoney Sharp, and Andrew Singer serving as executive producers.

False Advertising (wt) – Presentation Tape

Known for their terrifyingly believable commercials, The Kloons bring competition (and their marketing genius) to a whole new level in this half-hour show. The comedy group pits two hilarious ideas against each other, creating real commercials (of totally fake products) to convince an unsuspecting focus group.
