Rihanna And Lupita Nyong’o In A Film Scripted By Issa Rae & Directed By Ava DuVernay

PARIS, FRANCE - MARCH 05: (L-R) Actress Lea Seydoux, Margot Robbie, singer Rihanna, actresses Lupita Nyong'o and Elizabeth Olsen attend the Miu Miu show as part of the Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Fall/Winter 2014-2015 on March 5, 2014 in Paris, France. So it’s actually happening! Yes indeed folks… what a time to be alive, right?

In brief, it’s an idea that began as a Twitter suggestion when the above 2014 photo of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o went viral, thanks to the below tweet.

Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scans https://twitter.com/blaquepink/status/854420031479971846

It would inspire many thousands of retweets and calls for the idea to become an actual movie, with Ava DuVernay directing from a script by Issa Rae.

And now it’s becoming a reality!

Netflix has reportedly picked up the project with the above 4 names attached (although Issa Rae is said to be “in talks” to write the screenplay”).

Apparently it was a hot property, as Entertainment Weekly (who broke the story at Cannes) reports, stating that Netflix made “a very aggressive bid,” beating out several other interested parties. Although Netflix has yet to confirm any of this, so we’re going strictly on Entertainment Weekly’s report. However, they are certainly a reputable source, so I have no reason to believe that this isn’t true.

The picture that started it all was taken during a Miu Miu fashion show that both Rihanna and Nyong’o attended in 2014.

A 2018 production start date is reportedly eyed.

One question that immediately comes to mind is whether the lady who originated the idea via her above tweet should/will receive any compensation for inspiring the whole project. This could be one of those precedent-setting situations.

Stay tuned for updates and any further confirmation on this…

Drake Breaks All-Time Record For Most Wins In A Single Night With 13 Awards On The ‘2017 BILLBOARD Music Awards’

The “2017 Billboard Music Awards,” hosted by hip-hop artist and actor Ludacris, and actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens, was an explosive night of must-see, one-of-a-kind musical performances and exclusive television premieres from today’s chart-topping artists. Ludacris and Vanessa brought the fun, and the funny, with their wide variety of talents as they both showed off their comedic chops, singing and dancing skills, and even some rapping from Ms. Hudgens!  This year’s show aired live on both coasts from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on SUNDAY, MAY 21, at 8:00 p.m. EDT / 5:00 p.m. PDT on ABC.

Drake surpassed Adele’s previously held (12) all-time record for most Billboard Music Awards in a single night, winning 13 awards including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Tour, Top Rap Album, Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top R&B Song, and Top R&B Collaboration.  Beyoncé won five trophies of her own, for Top Female Artist, Top Touring Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Tour, and Top R&B Album. Twenty One Pilots won in five categories – Top Duo/Group, Top Radio Song Artist, Top Rock Artist, Top Rock Song, and Billboard Chart Achievement Award Presented by Xfinity. The Chainsmokers won in four categories – Top Hot 100 Song, Top Dance/Electronic Artist, Top Collaboration, and Top Dance/Electronic Song. Halsey took home three awards for Top Hot 100 Song, Top Collaboration, and Top Dance/Electronic Song.  Also ending the night with three trophies were Kyla (Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top R&B Song, Top R&B Collaboration) and Wizkid (Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top R&B Collaboration, Top R&B Song).  They weren’t the only multi-award winners of the night. Desiigner, Juan Gabriel, Justin Timberlake, Kenny Chesney, and Lauren Daigle each took home a pair of trophies.

The show was filled with iconic moments, with performances and celebrations for every generation. Fresh artists like Julia Michaels and Camila Cabello won over fans with performances of their new singles, as did the legends. Giving her first award show performance in 15 years, Cher had the audience on their feet, delivering electrifying renditions of her classic hits “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”  She graciously accepted the ICON Award, presented to her by Gwen Stefani, and gave a powerful speech about her unparalleled career and how she has been able to live out her childhood dream for the past fifty-three years. Cher told the audience, “I have wanted to do what I do since I was four years old, and I’ve been doing this for fifty-three years.” Last year’s ICON Award recipient, Celine Dion, sparkled beneath an elaborate chandelier, belting out her hit single “My Heart Will Go On,” in celebration of the 20th anniversary of “Titanic.”

Making a very special appearance, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Biggie’s son, Christopher Wallace, on what would have been the 45th birthday of Notorious B.I.G., introduced a clip of the 1997 Billboard Music Awards when Diddy presented Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, with the “Best R&B Album” trophy won by her late son. Following the clip, Diddy unveiled a never-before-seen trailer for his new Apple Music documentary “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A Bad Boy Story.”

Nicki Minaj, having recently just broken Aretha Franklin’s record for female artist with the most Billboard Hot 100 Hits, opened the show with an explosive 10-minute performance and was joined on stage by Lil Wayne, David Guetta, and Jason Derulo as she performed a medley of “No Frauds,” “Light My Body Up,” Swalla,” and “Regret In Your Tears.” Later in the evening, against a peaceful ocean background, Miley Cyrus performed her popular new single “Malibu” for the first time to a worldwide television audience.

Perhaps the most unique performance came from the evening’s biggest winner, Drake, who performed live from the middle of the Bellagio fountains, surrounded by the world-famous water displays and equally powerful pyrotechnics.  Audiences in the arena, and on the Vegas strip, were mesmerized as he navigated the scene while rapping “Gyalchester” off his new album “More Life.”

Lorde’s intimate rendition of “Green Light” had the crowd dancing and singing along, while Halsey’s “Now or Never” performance was filled with both flower and fire power.  Ed Sheeran delivered a heartfelt rendition of his new song “Castle on the Hill” from a sold-out performance in Santiago, Chile.

Imagine Dragons delivered touching remarks in memory of the late Soundgarden and Audioslave Frontman Chris Cornell, before giving a powerful performance of their new song, “Believer.”  Fellow rock artists, and multi-nominees, The Chainsmokers also took to the stage to perform their hit “Young.”

Country music was also well represented throughout the evening, with Sam Hunt giving a stunning performance of “Body Like a Back Road” and Florida Georgia Line being joined by John Legend for a unique melding of their songs “Surefire” and “H.O.L.Y.”

The final performance of the evening came from Bruno Mars, who gave a sultry delivery of his single “Versace on the Floor” from the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam.

The musical acts weren’t the only stars taking over the stage at this year’s show.  Presenters throughout the broadcast included Kate Beckinsale, Mark Cuban, Noah Cyrus, Alexandra Daddario, DJ Khaled, Josh Duhamel, Ansel Elgort, Sara Foster, G-Eazy, Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Prince Michael Jackson, Rachel Lindsay, Julia Michaels, Lea Michele, Olivia Munn, Rita Ora, Logan Paul, Rachel Platten, Bebe Rexha, Nicole Scherzinger, Miss America 2017 Savvy Shields, Jussie Smollett, Hailee Steinfeld, Lindsey Stirling, and Ashley Tisdale.

Sasheer Zamata Leaving ‘Saturday Night Live’!

Sources confirm to Deadline that Sasheer Zamata is leaving Saturday Night Live, the show’s third cast member in a week to make the just-ended Season 42 the last.

Zamata, who was with the show for four seasons, follows Vanessa Bayer and Bobby Moynihan, both of whom have confirmed that last night’s season finale would be their last.

Though she hadn’t scored any real breakthrough original characters, Zamata did a strong Michelle Obama, and included Rihanna and Solange Knowles among her roster. She played the clueless vlogger Janelle in a recurring bit, including once with Chris Rock as her dad.

She was a regular on the show’s “Black Jeopardy” skits, including this excellent one with Tom Hanks last October:

Zamata also has appeared on TBS’s People of Earth, Amazon’s Transparent, Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer and Netflix’s Bojack Horseman, and her comedy special Sasheer Zamata: Pizza Mind debuted in March on SeeSo. Features include Sleight, Yoga Hosers and Deidra & Laney Rob a Train, among others. Upcoming is The Outdoorsman.

Like Bayer and Moynihan, Zamata wasn’t given an onscreen send-off last night, though the three did get a hero’s hoist once the cameras were off. Zamata shared the moment on her Instagram page today:

Offstage, Zamata is the American Civil Liberties Union’s Celebrity Ambassador for Women’s Rights.

Entertainment Tonight was first to report Zamata’s exit.

With Freeform Order Of New ‘Black-ish’ Spinoff Titled ‘College-ish’, Deon Cole Is Making A Run To Stardom!

With yesterday’s news of the new Freeform order of the Black-ish spin-off titled College-ish, comedian and actor Deon Cole quietly is making a television run for the ages!

How might you ask? Well, if you hadn’t noticed, Cole will be on five, count ’em FIVE, series and or TV shows at the same time! Never before has any actor guest starred or appeared in FIVE series/TV shows at the same time.

Cole is currently on Conan (he’s also a writer on the show), Black-ish, College-ish, Face Value and Angie Tribeca and we hear that he’s even up for several film roles including the film titled The Female Brain supposedly set to debut later this year. In comparison, none of the TV greats in comedy has done this feat, and even today’s hottest star Kevin Hart is not starring in five series-yet.

What’s the future hold for Cole? Well, we think Hollywood is quickly taking notice, and he’s sure to be one of the next future stars. Stay tuned, as we will hopefully get a chance to ask Cole about some of his future endeavors.

‘Black-ish’ Spinoff ‘College-ish’ Starring Yara Shahidi Gets Freeform Series Order

Starring Black-ish breakout Yara Shahidi and Deon Cole, from Black-ish executive producer Kenya Barris, College-ish follows the Johnson’s eldest daughter Zoey (Shahidi) as she heads off to college and quickly discovers that not everything goes her way once she leaves the nest. The series is described as a contemporary take on the current issues facing both students and administrators in the world of higher education. Cole plays Charlie, who moonlights as an adjunct marketing professor. They’ll be joined by new characters both in the administration and student body who reflect the complex and hilarious points of view that populate college campuses.

“I never thought they’d let me put Black-ish on the air, let alone give me a spin-off,” said Barris. “I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to continue working with Yara and the rest of this talented young cast. To any aspiring writers struggling to make it out there, I highly advise adding an ‘-ish’ to any working title you might have. It seems to be the move.”

The episode of Black-ish, which served as a backdoor pilot for College-ish, also featured Chris Parnell, Matt Walsh and young actor Trevor Jackson. While the pilot was received well at ABC, it was deemed too young-skewing for the broadcast network but would fit right into the millennial demo target of cable sibling Freeform. Talks about migrating the comedy from ABC to the cable network started about 10 days ago.

“Our goal at Freeform is to celebrate the power, possibility and inclusivity of youth culture through our shows,” said Karey Burke, the netowrk’s EVP Programming & Development. “Kenya Barris blazes new trails in the funniest way possible with College-ish, and we can’t wait to get schooled by the incredibly talented Yara Shahidi, who is the perfect addition to our Freeform family.”

Barris, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland and Brian Dobbins are executive producers of the series, from ABC Studios. The show was written by Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore, who is no longer with the project.

Black-ish is following in the footsteps of hit 1980s NBC family sitcom The Cosby Show, which similarly spun off the Huxtables’ daughter Denise (Lisa Bonet) into her own series, A Different World, when she went to college.

TBS To Launch Late-Night Contemporary ‘Soul Train’ Set in “Surreal Underground Music Club” Tilted ‘Poundhole’!

TBS_logo_2016.svg

Turner’s TBS network is developing a fully interactive late-night programming block with sister company Super Deluxe. The block will feature a wide variety of content from the multi-platform studio’s rapidly growing creative stable, all presented with interactive components to further engage the members of the mobile-first generation. TBS plans to launch the weekly 90-minute block this fall with a comedy lineup that ranges in tone. It will be divided into quarter-hours, each comprised of scripted series, culturally relevant docu-series and unconventional creative voices from diverse backgrounds.

Among the projects slated to appear as part of TBS’ upcoming Super Deluxe late-night block is a show titled “Poundhole,” which the network describes as a contemporary take on “Soul Train” that takes place in “a surreal underground music club,” says the press release.

No other details are available on “Poundhole” at this time.

The rest of the late-night block includes:

— “Art Theifs” (that’s exactly how it’s spelled) – In this series from creators Joseph Carnegie and Ben Jones and executive producers Angela Petrella and Abso Lutely Productions, two friends try to infiltrate the Los Angeles art scene in the hopes of stealing enough priceless art to buy fast cars and a used hot tub. It’s not long before they find out that art in 2017 isn’t always heist-worthy.

— “Dummy” – This buddy comedy from creator Cody Heller follows an aspiring writer and her boyfriend’s sex doll.

Details about the block’s interactive components will be announced in the coming months.

“With this block, we are combining TBS’s power as America’s most popular comedy network with Super Deluxe’s phenomenally creative output and interactive engagement tools to create a vital new entry in the late-night landscape,” said Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS. “The Super Deluxe block will also provide TBS with an enticing new connection point for young adult viewers.”

“As we continue to build Super Deluxe into the entertainment brand of the future, having a regular block on TBS will make us one of the only omniplatform brands to have a meaningful TV presence,” said Wolfgang Hammer, president of Super Deluxe. “We’re not just selling shows. We’re creating series for the largest comedy network in the country. We look forward to showcasing Super Deluxe’s unique brand of original programming on TBS and engaging with viewers through the block’s interactive components.”

Since launching last year, Super Deluxe has quickly become a formidable digital force with its targeted audience of young, mobile-centric consumers. It currently averages 40 million unique viewers per month on social media and recently hit 1 billion video views. In addition, it was recently cited during the Facebook F8 conference as the gold standard in Facebook Live video programming.

HBO has handed out a straight-to-series order for Lovecraft Country, a drama series from the Get Out writer-director. Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the hourlong show be written by Underground executive producer and writer Misha Green, who will also serve as showrunner.

The drama — described as an anthological horror series that reclaims genre storytelling from the African-American perspective — hails from Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, as well as Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Peele and Green will executive produce alongside Bad Robot’s J.J Abrams and Ben Stephenson.

Lovecraft Country follows 25-year-old Atticus Black, who joins up with his childhood friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America to find his missing father. The journey sets off their fight to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and malevolent spirits.

The news of the series order comes not long after Peele’s production company set a first-look film deal with Universal Pictures, the studio behind his critical and commercial hit Get Out. Peele first formed Monkeypaw in 2012 while starring on the Emmy-winning Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele.
