FOX Set To Have A ‘Empire’ And ‘Star’ Crossover For Fall Debut

Narratively speaking, this should be easier to pull off than the creatively complex Bones/Sleepy Hollow mashup: Fox is mulling a crossover between Lee Daniels’ musical-themed dramas Empire and Star.

A Fox spokesperson declined to comment, but sources confirm that the network — which is pairing the shows on Wednesdays this fall — is in talks to temporarily merge the universes of both series as part of a one-night premiere event on Sept. 27 (which is when Empire and Star are slated to kick off their respective fourth and second seasons).

Details on the potential (and, let’s face it, inevitable) crossover remain murky, but we’re going to go out on a limb and speculate that Fox would not pass up an opportunity to put Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie and Queen Latifah’s Carlotta in the same room together.

WATCH: Jackie Chan Plays A Revenge-Fueled Ex-Military Super Agent In ‘The Foreigner’

Jackie Chan’s latest movie, The Foreigner, seems to have a simple message behind it: No more Mr. Nice Guy. Instead of dishing out a flurry of punishment to bad guys with his characteristic grin and quirky antics, the action flick puts Chan in a more dour role — and it’s about damn time we saw this side of the action star.

Chan stars as Quan, a quiet businessman, and loving father whose world is torn apart when his daughter is killed in a politically motivated bombing in London. Directed by Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell, The Foreigner chronicles Quan’s relentless search for his daughter’s killers. Opposite Chan is Pierce Brosnan as Liam Hennessy, a British politician with a shady past and ties to the IRA.

Similar to Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills, in Taken, Chan’s character has a very particular set of skills, acquired over a long career: guerilla warfare; close-quarters marksmanship; and the ability to dish out an acrobatic ass-kicking that’d be unbelievable for any 63-year-old other than Chan.

Consider this scene from the trailer: After his daughter’s death, Chan visits Brosnan at his office to beg the politician for information on the killers. When Brosnan turns him down, Chan leaves. Moments later, a bomb goes off downstairs, shaking the building, and a phone rings in the office. It’s Chan, with a single demand: “You will tell me the names of the bombers.”

From there, it’s a flurry of asskicking, muffled gunfire from homemade silencers, kicks to the gut and face, punctuated by one-liners from a menacing Jackie Chan.

In one exchange, Brosnan warns Chan, “You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

“Yes I do. Do you?” Chan replies.

No, they really don’t.

Samuel L. Jackson Will Reprise Role Of Nick Fury For ‘Captain Marvel’

Rumors began popping up on the fanboy sites over the Independence Day holiday that Samuel L. Jackson was reprising his role as Avengers architect and recruiter Nick Fury in Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and we hear it’s true that Jackson will be making an appearance in the movie.

The last time we saw Fury was in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Prior to that Fury was shot and hospitalized in 2014’s Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Marvel announced Brie Larson as Air Force Pilot Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel at last year’s Comic-Con. Half Nelson directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck boarded as directors of Captain Marvel in April. The movie, the first female-led superhero project under Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, is scheduled for release on March 8, 2019.

Danvers debuted in 1968 as a human companion to the original Captain Marvel (the space alien Mar-Vell), the sixth character to use that title in the comics. She developed super powers of her own in a mid-’70s storyline and was given her own title, Ms. Marvel, in 1977. She was named Marvel’s official Captain Marvel in 2012 in tribute to the original, killed off via cancer in a 1982 graphic novel, with the Ms. Marvel moniker going to Kamala Khan, Marvel’s first headlining Muslim character.

Marvel would not comment on the news. Jackson is repped by ICM, Anonymous Content and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.

Mustafa Shakir, Gabrielle Dennis Join Cast Of ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ For Season 2 On Netflix

Mustafa Shakir and Gabrielle Dennis

Mustafa Shakir and Gabrielle Dennis

Marvel Television and Netflix have announced that Mustafa Shakir (The DeuceThe Night Of) and Gabrielle Dennis (Rosewood) have joined the season 2 cast of Marvel’s Luke Cage, set to premiere in 2018.

Shakir has been cast to play John McIver, described as a natural leader, brimming with charisma, whose mission is focused on Harlem and vengeance.

Dennis will play the role of Tilda Johnson, who is described as a brilliant, holistic doctor with a complicated history in Harlem where, as much as she tries to stay far from trouble, it seems to always find her.

These names will ring familiar to Marvel fans as the real names of two supervillains, Bushmaster and Nightshade.

However, we still aren’t certain if these are the exact incarnations of the characters that we’ll see on Marvel’s Luke Cage. Plus, Actress Nabiyah Be revealed on Twitter in a now-deleted tweet that she would portray “Tilda Johnson” in Black Panther, who seems to be the woman helping bust Klaw out of the interrogation room.

Will there be two Tilda Johnsons in the MCU? I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

“Mustafa’s incredible presence and power ignited us from our first meeting, and Gabrielle brings the charm and smarts to a very complicated role,” remarked executive producer, Jeph Loeb. “Both will be wonderful additions to our already magnificent cast.”

“I can’t wait for audiences to see the compelling paces we put both Mustafa and Gabrielle through,” said Marvel’s Luke Cageexecutive producer and showrunner, Cheo Hodari Coker. “From the moment you see each of them on screen, I feel they will be powerful additions to the world of Marvel and Harlem’s Luke Cage.”

Shakir and Dennis will join returning cast members Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, and Theo Rossi as Shades.

Marvel’s Luke Cage is executive produced by Cheo Hodari Coker (Ray Donovan, Southland) and Aïda Croal (The Returned, True Blood) as co-executive producer, along with Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Punisher, Marvel’s Inhumans), and Jim Chory (Marvel’s Punisher, Marvel’s Inhumans).

Urban Movie Channel To Debut Soapy Comedy/Drama ‘The Rich and The Ruthless’ From Victoria Rowell

The Urban Movie Channel has announced it’s first original series pick-up for the summer, and it’s from daytime television veteran, Victoria Rowell.

Rowell is the creator of The Rich and the Ruthless, which will also star Richard Brooks, Dawnn Lewis, Robert Ri’chard, Chrystale Wilson, Caryn Ward Ross and many more.

In what Rowell has called her “passion project,”  the show which will use a “soap-within-a-soap” format and chronicle the real-life drama of the actors and crew of the first black-run daytime drama in the soap opera industry.

The show’s description reads, “When greedy studio executives inform self-made business man and showrunner Augustus Barringer (Richard Brooks) that “The Rich and the Ruthless” is getting booted off the sound stages for another talk show after twenty years, Augustus is ready to fight back by any means necessary to stay on the air – even if that means filming out of his sleek Hollywood mansion or moving the company to Jamaica! Meanwhile his unpredictable wife, Kitty Barringer (Victoria Rowell), is not happy about any of it. After recently returning home from her latest stint in rehab, she decides it’s time to claw her way back up the cliff and make her soap diva comeback to her role on the show as Blue Sylla, much to her husband’s chagrin.”

Rowell notoriously played fan-favorite, diva Drucilla “Dru” Winters on The Young and the Restless, who is arguably one of the most prominent and notable black characters in the history of daytime.  After criticizing the soap for not having enough black talent on-camera and behind the scenes, she left in 2007.

The six-episode scripted comedy will premiere on July 28.
