On This Day In Comedy… In 1994 ‘Sister, Sister’ Premiered On ABC!
On this day in comedy on April 1, 1994, Sister, Sister premiered on ABC!
Starring the Mowry Twins (Tia & Tamera), this sitcom also lived two lives. Starting out as a mid-season replacement on ABC it was cancelled by the network when the show didn’t perform up to its ratings standards in the second season. The fact the network changed its time slot might’ve had something to do with it, but it didn’t matter. The newly founded WB stepped in and slotted it on their schedule. There it caught its stride.
The show was about identical twins separated at birth and adopted into two very different situations. After 14 years, they discover each other and reunite. They’re now one big happy family with one twin’s father (Tim Reid) and the other’s mother (Jackee Harry) under the same roof. Naturally there’s an annoying neighbor who stops by unannounced; this time it’s in the form of Marques Houston. The boyfriends who come along later are played by RonReaco Lee and Deon Richmond. Other characters included Tahj Mowry as cousin, Tahj, Brittany Murphy as their best friend, Dorien Wilson as a boyfriend to Jackee Harry and Sherman Hemsley as Tim Reid’s daddy.
Sister, Sister was created by Kim Bass, Fred Shafferman and Gary Gilbert. A device used early on had the girls breaking the fourth wall often and talking to the audience. That was tapered down once the show moved to the WB and was eliminated altogether by the series final season. Sister, Sister won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lighting Direction (Electronic) for a Comedy Series for George Spiro Dibie; four acting Image Awards for The Mowrys and Jackee Harry; three Kids’ Choice Awards for acting for the Mowrys and a Young Artist Award for Marques Houston. It aired its final episode May 23, 1999.
On This Day In Comedy… In 1938 Comedic Actor Nathaniel “Rollo” Taylor Was Born!
On this day in comedy on March 31, 1938 Actor, Nathaniel “Rollo” Taylor was born in St. Louis, Missouri, 1938
Nathaniel Taylor gained popularity during the Blaxploitation Era. In 1972, he was featured in the Robert Hook’s hit movie, Trouble Man. Taylor played the most visible henchman; the one with speaking lines as opposed to one of the disposable, die quick henchman. However, Taylor is known chiefly for his role as Rollo Larson on NBC’s hit sitcom, Sanford and Son. Taylor was Lamont Sanford’s recurring running buddy; the embodiment of the cool, yet shifty brother in the hood. He played opposite Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson in the original and reprised the part in the 1980-1981 spin-off Sanford, also starring Foxx (Demond Wilson did not return).
Taylor was more than just a comedic actor. He displayed his range as a sax player looking for his roots with his father (Clarence Muse) in the 1977 film, Passing Through, written by Ted Lange and Lenny Clark. However, comedy was his thing. Taylor worked with Redd Foxx again on the short-lived ABC series The Redd Foxx Show in 1986. He also appeared on What’s Happening!! as Rerun’s brother-in-law, Ike.

Every year the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival celebrates the leading talent in the comedy industry with a big ceremony with a star-studded red carpet that is essentially the closest thing comedy has to an Oscars night. This year’s winners will be honored at an event in Montreal on Friday, July 28th at 3pm.

Jim Carrey will be given the Generation Award, which was created in 2015 to honor Dave Chappelle. I’m Dying Up Here will have a big presence at the festival this year with panel discussions, stand up, and much more.
Mike Birbiglia is being named Stand-Up Comedian of the Year this year (last year, it was Sebastian Maniscalco) and Breakout Comedian of the Year goes to Ali Wong after her debut hour special Baby Cobra was the talk of the year in 2016, and her new hour, she’s been touring this year, is getting major buzz. Chris Tucker And DL Hughley Teaming Up For Tampa Show-Are More On The Way?
Chris Tucker has definitely slowed down the rate of his movie roles over the past few years, but he has a full slate of stand-up comedy performances coming up, including a big show in Tampa with comedian DL Hughley.

Tucker, who starred in comedy classics such as Friday and the Rush Hour franchise made a much-heralded return to the stage in 2015 with the Netflix special Chris Tucker Live.
Most recently Tucker appeared in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016), and Silver Linings Playbook (2012). There’s also the long-rumored fourth Rush Hour film, which as recently as March director Brett Rattner told Entertainment Weekly was still happening.
Hughley is first and foremost a stand-up comedian, though his many forays into TV include his sitcom The Hughleys, a CNN talk show and a turn on Dancing With the Stars. His most recent comedy special, Clear, debuted on Showtime in 2014.

Bill Cosby To Shuffle Legal Team As Retrial For 2004 Rape Looms
Bill Cosby has had a revolving door of attorneys the past few years and now with a retrial approaching this fall for the much accused actor in the criminal case for a 2004 rape, it looks like he will be making some more changes in his legal team.
While Brian McMonagle is still actively on the defense team currently with litigator Angela Agrusa, we hear that the aggressive Philadelphia-based attorney could be exiting in the coming weeks. Having been with Cosby almost right after the actor was arrested for the sexual assault against former Temple University employee Andrea Constand at the end of 2015, McMonagle could leave the defense as Cosby contemplates bringing in new blood for the November 6 scheduled retrial in Norristown, PA.
“A new trial is a chance to reset and find the right players to get the judgment the defense desires,” an individual close to the workings of Team Cosby tells Deadline. “It’s not personal,” the source added of the rumors that started last week that McMonagle could be out. Like a smart lawyer, McMonagle did not respond to Deadline’s request for comment. However, Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt told Deadline this evening that “right now, our legal team is in place.” He would not comment more on the matter.
Unlike the June 5 starting first trial with its deadlocked jury, if found guilty the nearly 80-year-old Cosby faces more than 10 years in jail for the three felony charges of second-degree aggravated indecent assault. Intent on pursuing the new trial against the actor ASAP, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele’s office has not indicated since the mistrial was declared on June 17 that they were going to change the charges.
Accused by over 60 women of sexually assaulting and drugging them over the decades, Cosby faces not only the criminal case in Pennsylvania, which has a much longer statute of limitations on sex crimes than most jurisdictions, but several other civil cases around the nation.
Cosby was arraigned December 30, 2015 in the criminal case and released on $1 million bail without entering a plea at the time. Despite admitting in depositions more than a decade ago to giving Constand Benadryl pills on the night of the alleged assault in his Philadelphia-area mansion, Cosby has always insisted that the encounter was consensual.
Since the allegations against Cosby started to become a flood in mid-2015, the actor first lost his long time Hollywood heavyweight attorney Marty Singer, who made a proxy cameo in the Norristown trial last month, in October of that year.
In July last year, Singer’s replacement and former Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher Tayback was pink slipped after he failed to stop the criminal case from moving forward. That is when LA-based Liner LLP’s Agrusa joined the team. A month later, Washington D.C.-based attorney Monique Pressley left the defense team. A familiar presence on cable news, Pressley was in many ways the public face of Cosby’s defense – a role Wyatt took over and clearly held during the criminal trial in June.
While changes swirl on the defense team, still not word if the much criticized town hall tour Cosby plan to take this summer will actually take place. Originally characterized as revolving around how to teach young people how to avoid sexual assault charges by his PR team, Cosby said in late June that “the current propaganda that I am going to conduct a sexual assault tour is false.” The Cosby Show co-creator added, “any further information about public plans will be given at the appropriate time.”
Which may be true too of who makes up his legal team for the retrial.
