Chris Rock isn’t exactly rushing back to Hollywood’s biggest night.
Four years after becoming the center of one of the most shocking moments in Oscars history, the legendary comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker has revealed that there is really only one way he would return to the Academy Awards—and it isn’t to host.
Rock says he’d come back if he were nominated for an Oscar.
And even he isn’t exactly betting on that happening.
During a recent interview with Variety while promoting his upcoming film Misty Green, Rock was asked about returning to the Oscars for the first time since the infamous 2022 ceremony.
His response was blunt.
“The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated, and I’m not getting nominated.”
Rock added that he’s perfectly comfortable with that possibility, essentially telling everyone to manage their expectations.
For fans hoping to see Rock back behind the microphone as Oscars host, however, the comedian isn’t giving them much reason to get excited.
Rock has hosted the Academy Awards twice—first in 2005 and again in 2016. The Academy itself previously described Rock as a major creative force when announcing his return for the 2016 ceremony.
But Rock now believes that chapter of his career may be coming to an end.
When asked whether he has been approached about hosting again, Rock praised the comedians currently doing the job rather than campaigning for another opportunity.
He specifically mentioned Conan O’Brien and Nikki Glaser, saying the current generation of hosts is doing a great job.
Rock’s message was essentially: maybe my time has passed.
That doesn’t necessarily mean he’d never do it again, but for now, he appears content to let someone else take the stage.
Of course, any discussion about Rock and the Oscars inevitably brings up the 2022 ceremony.
During that year’s broadcast, actor Will Smith walked onto the Oscars stage and slapped Rock after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
The moment instantly became one of the most talked-about live television incidents in recent memory.
Smith went on to win Best Actor that night for King Richard, while the Academy later banned him from attending Academy events for 10 years.
Four years later, Rock appears much less interested in reliving the controversy.
While discussing the incident with Variety, he expressed regret that it happened but made it clear that he doesn’t view the moment as the defining event of his life.
Rock also indicated that he didn’t want discussion of the incident to overshadow the work of Rosalind Eleazar, who stars in Misty Green.
That response says quite a bit about where Rock appears to be professionally.
He’s looking forward.
The timing of Rock’s comments is particularly interesting because Misty Green represents a major creative moment for him.
The film marks Rock’s return to directing following his 2014 feature Top Five. He wrote, directed, and stars in the movie, which also features Rosalind Eleazar, Anna Kendrick, Adam Driver, and Daniel Kaluuya.
Rather than spending his time looking backward at the Oscars controversy, Rock is concentrating on filmmaking.
And that’s probably the bigger story.
For decades, Rock has been one of the most influential comedians in American entertainment. He’s moved between stand-up, television, film, directing, producing, and live performance while maintaining a career that has few comparisons.
The Oscars may have been one of his biggest stages—but they certainly aren’t the only one.
Never say never.
Rock himself didn’t completely close the door on returning as host. But his comments make clear that he’s not actively pursuing it.
If the Academy wants him back as a host, it may have to wait.
If Rock wants to return as a nominee, however, that’s a different story.
For now, his position is surprisingly simple: give him a reason to be there.
And what better reason than an Oscar nomination?

One thing is certain: If Chris Rock ever walks onto that Oscars stage again, don’t expect him to arrive simply because Hollywood asked. He wants to have earned his invitation.
