Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group are developing a scripted series inspired by the early days of the iconic hip-hop duo and their rise to fame in West Philadelphia.
Before Will Smith became a Hollywood superstar and the star of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he was a young rapper in Philadelphia working alongside his longtime friend and musical collaborator, DJ Jazzy Jeff. Now, that origin story is being developed for television in a new scripted series titled 215.
The project is being developed by Smith’s Westbrook Studios in partnership with The Malar Group. Set in West Philadelphia during the late 1980s, the series will explore the beginnings of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, tracing the ambition, friendship, and determination that helped propel the duo from their neighborhood into the mainstream music industry.
According to the project’s description, 215 will follow a quick-witted teenage rapper, his DJ partner, and the circle of friends who help fuel their dreams. As they pursue a record deal and search for a path beyond their hometown, the young artists must navigate the challenges of the growing hip-hop business, hometown loyalties, unexpected opportunities, and the pressures that accompany success.
The series takes its name from Philadelphia’s 215 telephone area code, placing the city and its local culture at the center of the story.
Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, whose real name is Jeffrey Townes, became one of hip-hop’s most recognizable early mainstream acts. Their partnership produced hits including “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “Summertime,” helping introduce their music to audiences well beyond the traditional hip-hop scene.
Their 1988 album, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper, became a major commercial success, while “Parents Just Don’t Understand” earned the duo the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989. Their success helped establish a path for hip-hop artists to reach wider audiences through radio, television and popular culture.
Smith’s career later expanded into acting, eventually making him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. His television breakthrough came with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the NBC sitcom that premiered in 1990 and drew inspiration from elements of his own life.
With 215, the story returns to the period before that television fame—when two young Philadelphia artists were working to turn their musical chemistry into a career.
The series marks the first project under the production partnership between Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group.
Terence Carter, president of television at Westbrook Studios, said the project is meaningful because it draws from the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince while celebrating Philadelphia during a defining era in the city’s hip-hop history.
Rather than focusing solely on the duo’s eventual fame, 215 is positioned to explore the relationships, setbacks and choices that shaped their early journey.
As of the development announcement, the series had not publicly confirmed a network or streaming platform, cast, or release date.
For fans of Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff and hip-hop history, 215 offers the possibility of seeing a formative chapter of their story brought to life—one rooted in friendship, ambition and the Philadelphia neighborhood that helped launch their careers.
