The Quadriplegic Comic Crystal R. Emery Brings The Laughs In New Haven

Posted Sep 10, 2025

NEW HAVEN, CONN. — Back by popular demand, Crystal R. Emery returns to the Bregamos Theater for a powerful night of storytelling and comedy on Saturday, September 20, at 7 p.m. “Stand Up with Crystal R. Emery” will see the New Haven-area resident, known for her work in theater and film, bring her sharp take on the absurdity of life at the center of the “ism” vortex of racism, sexism and ableism. Emery returns to the stage after a sold-out performance at the same venue in April.

The multihyphenate — director, producer, author, speaker and nonprofit chief — does it all despite being a quadriplegic. She recently set her sights on comedy, taking to the stage for the first time in January, brought on by popular comic Michelle Buteau, and later by comedy titan D. L. Hughley.

“How do you do stand-up comedy when you can’t stand up?” Emery quipped. “I’ve never let my disability define me and this is another way to share my life’s story.”

Emery has recently had another first, becoming a novelist with Without a Trace, a contemporary coming-of-age story about a Hartford teen named Tanya, whose life is turned upside down when an enigmatic figure from her past reappears years later. Copies of Without a Trace will be available for purchase at the Bregamos Community Theater and is also available in paperback on Amazon and on Kindle.

The Bregamos Community Theater is located at 491 Blatchley Avenue in New Haven.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at https://shorturl.at/wuh1d.
