‘Scrubs’ Reboot at ABC Brings Back Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa

Posted Sep 2, 2025

ABC is officially reviving the beloved medical comedy Scrubs, and fans have reason to celebrate: Judy Reyes will return as Carla Espinosa, the no-nonsense head nurse and emotional anchor of Sacred Heart Hospital. Reyes joins original cast members Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke, who are all set to reprise their roles in the new series, slated to premiere during the 2025–2026 TV season.

Reyes portrayed Carla across the first eight seasons of Scrubs, earning critical acclaim and two ALMA Awards for her performance. Though she was absent from the show’s final season in 2009, her return fills a major gap in the reboot’s nostalgic lineup. She’ll appear in a recurring guest star role, with special scheduling accommodations made to balance her commitments to ABC’s procedural drama High Potential.

The new Scrubs will follow JD (Braff) and Turk (Faison) as they “scrub in together for the first time in a long time.” While medicine and interns have changed, their bromance remains intact. The series promises a mix of new and returning characters, navigating the evolving world of Sacred Heart with humor, heart, and surprises.

  • Bill Lawrence, the original creator, returns as executive producer
  • Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra will serve as showrunners
  • Produced by 20th Television in collaboration with Lawrence’s Doozer Productions

Carla Espinosa was more than just a nurse—she was the moral compass of the show, grounding its zany humor with emotional depth and fierce loyalty. Her dynamic with Turk, her mentorship of interns, and her sharp wit made her a fan favorite. Bringing Reyes back signals ABC’s commitment to honoring the show’s legacy while refreshing it for a new generation.

With Reyes back in scrubs, the reboot is shaping up to be a heartfelt reunion and a promising new chapter.
