The Review Of The 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards!

Posted Oct 5, 2016

On a night of the first and only Vice Presidential debate, the BET Hip Hop Awards: urged their audience to ensure that everyone is registered to vote, to know where their poling stations are located and highlighted the final countdown of President Barak Obama’s second term in the White House. BIG K.R.I.T. commanded the crowd with his signature, awe-inspiring spoken word piece and Sway introduced the live Cypher (praised to be the idea of Snoop Dogg) featuring Dead Prez, which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Black Panthers.

The 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards stage was not short of topics that separates nominees from the veterans. From Beanie Segal’s bars that shot at emcee’s that are dressing like women and calling it fashion to Young M.A bodying her freestyle making it clear that [they] talk and she spits. DJ Khalid hosted the 6th annual awards show, with a major key alert of course and gave a sneak-peak performance of “Holy Keys” featuring Betty Wright.  Other performers included Gucci Mane, O.T. Genasis, Young M.A, Lecrae, Desiigner and T.I., to name a few.

The overall theme of the night echoed that of the nation, touching on topics that split party lines. Even though this a celebration of music and culture, an emphasis was placed on the present, so that history is not repeated and a future that is promising to all communities, will be afforded by going out to the voting polls and making a conscious stand.

Snoop Dogg won the I Am Hip Hop Award “a sentimental moment” as he put it. He encouraged the new rappers to always be who they are even if you are misunderstood and to continue to unite the people, as music is the universal language. Kendrick Lamar took home Lyricist of the Year, while Fat Joe and Remy Ma won Track of the Year. For the full list of winners and to watch the show in it’s entirety go to http://www.bet.com/
