Neil Brown Jr. Joins Cast of BET+’s Martin Spinoff Series ‘Varnell Hill’

Posted Sep 23, 2025

BET+ is diving back into the world of classic sitcoms with Varnell Hill, a spinoff of the iconic ’90s comedy Martin, and it’s bringing in serious talent. Neil Brown Jr., best known for his role as Ray Perry on CBS’s SEAL Team, has officially joined the cast of the upcoming series, adding dramatic depth and charisma to the ensemble.

Brown Jr. will portray a new character in the Martin universe, though details about his role are being kept under wraps. His casting signals a shift toward blending comedy with grounded storytelling, a balance he’s mastered in roles across SEAL Team, Straight Outta Compton, and Insecure.

The series centers on Varnell Hill, the flashy, self-absorbed talk show host originally played by Tommy Davidson in Martin. Davidson reprises his role, now navigating the highs and lows of fame, relationships, and reinvention in the modern entertainment landscape. The show promises to explore Varnell’s world with sharp humor and nostalgic nods, while introducing new characters who challenge and complement his journey.

Produced by BET+ in collaboration with creators from the original Martin series, Varnell Hill is being developed as both a tribute and a reinvention. The show aims to capture the spirit of the original while expanding its universe for a new generation of viewers.

Neil Brown Jr.’s addition to the cast is a strategic move, bringing gravitas and versatility to a series that’s expected to blend outrageous comedy with heartfelt moments. His presence alongside Davidson sets the stage for dynamic chemistry and layered storytelling.

With production underway and anticipation building, Varnell Hill is poised to be a standout in BET+’s lineup. Neil Brown Jr.’s casting adds serious momentum—and fans of Martin and SEAL Team alike have plenty to look forward to.
