Is VH1's Basketball Wives TV Show Becoming A Movie?

Posted May 2, 2012

According to Variety, it looks like VH1’s Basketball Wives show is about to turn into a new film for Fox Searchlight. It seems that Producer Tracey Edmonds (most recently of Jumping The Broom fame) and Basketball Wives Executive Producer/Star Shaunie O’Neal (Shaunie is also the ex wife of NBA All Star Shaquille O’Neal), are in the early stages of planning the film.

Check out the article from Variety;

Fox Searchlight has acquired an untitled pitch from “Jumping the Broom” producer Tracey Edmonds and “Basketball Wives” star Shaunie O’Neal.

“Broom” scribe Elizabeth Hunter will pen the script, with Edmonds and O’Neal producing under the former’s Our Stories Films banner. Shingle’s Glendon Palmer and Phil Robinson will exec produce.

O’Neal, the ex-wife of NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal, exec produces and stars in VH1’s “Basketball Wives.”

Drawing loosely from the lives of O’Neal and some of her friends, the Searchlight project centers around a young woman who follows her boyfriend to Miami after he gets drafted into the NBA. Thrust into the world of professional sports, she meets the other players’ wives and learns from their trials and tribulations.

“The beauty of a feature film is that we’ll have the ability to dig much deeper into the stories and characters that come from this very colorful world and create a very juicy, action-packed narrative,” Edmonds told Variety, adding that O’Neal originally reached out to the producer via Twitter.

Anonymous Content, attorney Darren Trattner and WME rep Hunter, who is currently writing a script for TBS and Lionsgate TV. Eisner and Frank rep Edmonds, while Sovereign Talent Group reps O’Neal.
