Ice Cube Says Warner Bros. Won’t Give Him ‘Friday’ Rights, and He’s Not Buying Them

Ice Cube wants full control of the “Friday” film franchise, but he says Warner Bros. is standing in his way. Appearing on the most recent episode of Mike Tyson’s “Hotboxin’” podcast, Cube urged the studio to give him the rights to the franchise and rejected the possibility of buying the rights from the studio himself. Cube starred in and wrote three “Friday” movies, all of which were produced and distributed by New Line Cinema. Warner Bros. now owns New Line, so Cube can’t move forward on a fourth “Friday” movie without the studios’ blessing.

“I don’t know. Warner Brothers is weird right now,” Cube said when asked about the fourth “Friday” movie, which is to be titled “Last Friday.” “I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”

When Tyson asked Cube if he would just pay to have the rights back in his control, Cube responded, “I ain’t putting shit up for it. Fuck no. They need to give it to me, and they’re going to make money. I’m not about to pay for my own stuff, that’s stupid. They need to do the right thing, get it to us, let us turn it into more money, and make the fans happy…We can do a lot with it.”

Variety has reached out to Warner Bros. for further comment.

Cube revealed earlier this year he has written two more “Friday” movies. He said Warner Bros. rejected both scripts. Cube told Tyson he is currently working outside of the Hollywood studio system due to his decision not to get the COVID vaccination shot. Cube confirmed in November that his refusal to get the shot cost him a $9 million movie role.

“I turned down a movie because I didn’t want to get the motherfucking jab,” Cube said. “I turned down $9 million. I didn’t want get the jab. Fuck that jab. Fuck ya’ll for trying to make me get it. I don’t know how Hollywood feels about me right now.”

Keke Palmer Reveals Baby Bump During ‘SNL’ Monologue

Keke Palmer

“Saturday Night Live” returned after the holiday break with host Keke Palmer making a big announcement: She is having a baby!

“People have been in my comments, saying, ‘Keke’s having a baby,’ ‘Keke’s pregnant,’ and I want to set the record straight,” Palmer said in her opening monologue. “I am!”

Palmer revealed the huge news by unveiling her baby bump during her animated and hysterical monologue talking about her big year starring in “Nope” and being nominated for an Academy Award –which she joked didn’t actually happen.

“I was trying so hard to keep it on the down-low ’cause I got a lot of stuff going on,” she said. “You know, people kept coming up to me, ‘Congratulations,’ and I’m like, ‘Shh, can y’all stop? I got a liquor sponsorship on the line.”

All joking aside, Palmer couldn’t contain her excitement.

“But honestly this is the biggest blessing, and I am so excited,” she said. “Guys, I am going to be a mom.”

She wrapped up on a reflective note.

“When I first got into comedy, and I dreamed of standing on this stage, I asked myself, ‘Keke, who will you be?,” she said. “Will you be like Maya Rudolph? Eddie Murphy? A Kristen Wiig-Type?’ And now I can tell you exactly who I am: Baby, I’m Keke Palmer.”

Also in the monologue, Palmer flashed back to her time starring in “Akeelah and the Bee” back in 2006.

“It was such a great experience. I had so much fun, except for when I got yelled at by Laurence Fishburne,” she said.

Palmer was very game in an opening sketch spoofing the soap opera network, getting hurled into wrestling positions and thrown into furniture by Cecily Strong. It was revealed at the end of the sketch stunt doubles were utilized. She also poked fun at Drake in a sketch focusing on women –“United Tingz of Aubrey” –who previously dated the singer. She later spoofed her pregnancy in an ultrasound sketch with her babies tipping a door dash driver from the womb. She also appeared in a sketch exploring the origins of “Hello, Kitty” (with a surprise cameo from “Russian Doll” star Natasha Lyonne) and showed off her musical chops in a video with SZA extolling the virtues of “Big Boys” and rocked “O, Holy Night” in a choir sketch.

Palmer, 29, is expecting with her boyfriend Darius Daulton, the brother of “Insecure” star Sarunas Jackson.

The show opened with a sketch taking aim at Herschel Walker and the run-off election.

“My ex-wife says all I do is run off,” quipped Kenan Thompson as Walker.

When asked about any scandals in his past, the clock runs for an hour with even more Walker gaffes.

“I feel very confident in this erection,” he said.

“Saturday Night Live” stars Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, Bowen Yang, Chloe Fineman, Punkie Johnson, Andrew Dismukes and Michael Che and Colin Jost as the hosts of Weekend Update. The cast also includes James Austin Johnson, Sarah Sherman, Marcello Hernandez, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker as featured players. Kent Sublette, Alison Gates and Streeter Seidell serve as the head writers for the show, while Liz Patrick directs.

Damon Wayans Jr.‘s Production Company Two Shakes Developing ’Shuga: Baltimore’ At CBS Studios For Paramount+

Damon Wayans Jr

Damon Wayans Jr. and Kameron Tarlow’s Two Shakes Entertainment is developing “Shuga: Baltimore” at CBS Studios for Paramount+, it was revealed at the ongoing Content London conference on Thursday.

Shuga: Baltimore” is an offshoot of “MTV: Shuga,” the MTV Staying Alive Foundation’s long-running drama series and multimedia campaign that launched on Dec. 1 (World AIDS Day), 2009, in Kenya and followed the lives of young people on the African continent. Since then, the drama has had iterations in Nigeria, South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire and India and has touched on numerous plot lines relating to HIV testing and prevention, COVID-19, family planning and contraception, transactional sex, gender-based violence, and condom use. Stars include Lupita Nyong’o (“Black Panther”) and Thuso Mbedu (“The Woman King”).

Billed as “hyper-surrealist,” “Shuga: Baltimore” follows the lives of six individuals finding the beauty in their futures while surviving in a rapidly tech gentrifying city where they will face love, resolve, loss and hope while confronting their new roles in an evolving world. CBS Studios bought the format from the MTV Staying Alive Foundation.

The writer and co-EP is Greg “Mellow” Brown and EPs include Wayans Jr. and Tarlow for Two Shakes Entertainment and Georgia Arnold, Sara Piot and Richard Warburton for MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Paramount Global. Arnold, who serves as senior VP, international social responsibility at Paramount, was on Content London The Big Picture panel, where industry leaders championing change in inclusivity and diversity, sustainability and environment, business practice and operations, and content and storytelling discuss how they are fostering positive change through new content, storytelling and supporting talent.

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation has proven impact with “MTV Shuga” viewers being twice as likely to get tested for HIV; more aware of HIV self testing; and young women are 55% less likely to test positive for chlamydia if they’ve been exposed to “MTV Shuga.”

Two Shakes was founded by Wayans Jr. and Tarlow with a commitment to taking characters who are traditionally fourth, fifth and sixth on a call sheet and making them first, second and third in a Two Shakes series. The company has a CBS Studios first look and is in production on their Netflix series “Glamorous,” starring Kim Cattrall and Miss Benny.

WATCH: New Teaser Trailer For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Debuts

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, Chris Pratt
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, Chris Pratt WALT DISNEY STUDIOS MOTION PICTURES /COURTESY EVERETT COLLECTION

The first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ushers in the end of an era for Marvel. The film is the final adventure of this iteration of the cosmic team, and it is also a final Marvel bow for James Gunn, who has departed the MCU to take a job as a top executive at DC Studios, where he co-runs its film, TV and animation efforts.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel, and introduces the character Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a game-changer for Marvel, which had already made $1 billion brands out of so-called “b-level” characters such as Iron Man. But 2014’s Guardians took that formula to a new level, turning obscure characters into a global brand. The film, which earned $773.3 million globally, ushered in an era in which quirky filmmakers such as Gunn put their own stamps on Marvel properties. A sequel followed in 2017, with the third eyed for 2020 before Gunn was fired from the property over offensive, old tweets before eventually being reinstated.

The Guardians, and the voice Gunn established, has been important to Marvel in between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3. The characters appeared in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, released last month on Disney+.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuts May 5, 2023.
