LOS ANGELES, CALIF.) – January 17, 2023 – Humor Mill, the leading digital entertainment company for comedy news, announces the launch of its inaugural awards show dedicated to recognizing comics of the past, present, and future on Tuesday, February 21 at The Directors Guild of America (DGA). The Humor Mill Comedy Awards is set to roll out a star-studded line-up of comedic co-hosts including BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood Executive Producer Chris Spencer and Detroit Comedian Tony T. Roberts. The unforgettable night will feature thrilling behind-the-scenes footage from social media correspondent Juhahn Jones, special tributes, surprise moments, and non-stop laughter for a celebratory night of acknowledging comedians across television, film, and digital platforms.

The Humor Mill Comedy Awards was curated to recognize the vibrant world of comedy, including seasoned comedians and the rise of social media stars who have achieved widespread fame on platforms like Vine, TikTok, and Instagram with the rise of online comedy. The live-to-tape production will honor a blend of veteran comics who have paved the way and emerging social influencers who are carving a new lane. The migration from traditional stand-up comedy to social media stardom has shifted the comedic landscape leading to an explosion of creativity, content, and exposure for comedic artists.

“Comedy has undergone a significant evolution and has become more mainstream and widely consumed,” says Humor Mill Founder Frank Holder. “Despite the tireless efforts of comedians, the recognition they receive is not always commensurate with their hard work, resulting in only a select few becoming well-known names. The Humor Mill Comedy Awards aims to bring urban comedy to the forefront and give proper recognition by introducing new voices to the world and honoring those who have made lasting contributions.”

The Humor Mill network includes a rolodex of outlets including its website, digital magazine, internet radio and cable broadcast channels with a boasting reach of over 4 million households serving as a launchpad for iconic comedians in the early stages of their careers who are now dominating box office numbers and breaking records in TV and film. The urban platform has cultivated a landing spot to introduce audiences to Black Hollywood household names as well as newcomers providing laughter, healing and comfort.

Scheduled to take place during the third week of Black History Month, the show aims to amplify the voices of the African-American diaspora, taking audiences through relatable, personal and funny comedy, particularly at a time when Black culture and their stories are being told.

Ticket availability and additional details for the live-taping event will be later announced. For media credential requests click here and for additional press inquiries contact humormillmedia@gmail.com. More information about Humor Mill can be found at www.humormilltv.com.

Dr. Dre Selling Catalog To Universal Music And Shamrock Holdings For $200 Million-Plus

Dr. Dre is selling a collection of music income streams and other assets in a deal that was being pitched for $250 million, sources state.

The assets, which generate nearly $10 million annually, are being acquired by Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group in two separate transactions. The deals, which have been rumored for several weeks, are said to be nearly closed and were shopped by Dre’s longtime attorney Peter Paterno of King, Holmes, Paterno & Soriano.

Reps for the firm, Dre, Universal, and Shamrock either declined or did not immediately respond to requests for comment, however a source close to Dre confirmed the report and said the final sale price is likely to be below the $250 million asking price, but well above $200 million.

The assets are said to include artist royalties from two of his solo albums and his share of N.W.A. artist royalties; his producer royalties; and the writer’s share of his song catalog where he doesn’t own publishing, which may include songs from his 1993 blockbuster album “The Chronic.” According to Billboard’s sources, that portion includes 75% to 90% of the package’s revenue and is likely being acquired by Shamrock (which owns some Taylor Swift master recordings), with UMG acquiring the remaining 10% to 25%.

Included in UMG’s acquisition would be the master recording of “The Chronic,” which is scheduled to revert to Dre from Death Row Entertainment (which recently was acquired by Dre’s protégé Snoop Dogg last year) in August of this year; his share of an Aftermath/Interscope joint venture with the Top Dawg label for Kendrick Lamar releases through that deal; and possibly some other assets. It does not include his ownership stake in the Aftermath label, which he co-owns with his longtime label home, UMG’s Interscope Records.

We will have more on this situation as it develops.

ABC Renews ‘Abbott Elementary’ For 3rd Season

Abbott Elementary Season 2

Abbott Elementary” is on a roll. After picking up three trophies at the Golden Globes on Tuesday — including best TV comedy — the series has officially been renewed for its third season at ABC. The news was announced by Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu, and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, at the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2023 press tour on Wednesday.

Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary” takes place in a Philadelphia public school and focuses on a group of educators — with different levels of experience and optimism, but all with the determination to help their students. Brunson plays eager but naive second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, and the cast also includes Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson.

Executive producers include Brunson, Justin Halpern, and Patrick Schumacker of Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions, and Randall Einhorn. The series hails from Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television.

Along with best TV comedy, the Golden Globes awarded to “Abbott Elementary” on Tuesday were best TV comedy actress (Brunson) and best TV supporting actor (Williams). At the Emmys in September 2021, the series was nominated for seven awards and picked up three for comedy casting, comedy writing, and supporting comedy actress (Ralph). Additionally, hours before the Season 3 renewal was announced, the Screen Actors Guild nominated “Abbott Elementary” for best comedy ensemble and best comedy actress (Brunson).

“This renewal is a richly deserved feather in the cap of Quinta Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Randall Einhorn, as well as the rest of the cast and crew of ‘Abbott Elementary,’” said Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group. “Each week, this talented group of artists celebrates true unsung heroes — public school teachers. And for some extra icing on the renewal cake, our favorite group of teachers was honored this morning with two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and last night with three Golden Globe Awards. ‘Abbott Elementary’ is the gift that keeps on giving, and I look forward to many more magnificent episodes of this brilliant, authentic, and just plain funny series.”

In an exclusive interview after the Golden Globes, Erwich said, “The show is in its second year, and I think it just continues to grow creatively. In Season 2, which is what we’re watching, each of the characters are getting more dynamic and the situations are getting funnier. So there’s years for this show to go. As for the future of ‘Abbott,’ I’m just constantly delighted and surprised by what Quinta and her team do.”

Eddie Murphy Makes “Slap Joke” At The Golden Globes!

During his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on Tuesday night, Eddie Murphy offered some key advice for up-and-comers in the industry: Don’t mess with Will Smith.

“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind,” Murphy said at the end of his speech. “It’s a blueprint and I’ve followed it my whole career. It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”

The joke — which, of course, references the infamous moment at last year’s Oscars when Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a jab at Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia — resulted in rapturous, shocked laughter from the audience.

The Cecil B. DeMille award, which has been given to standout filmmakers and performers in the entertainment industry since 1952, was presented to Murphy by Tracy Morgan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Murphy starred with Morgan in the original “Coming to America” and its 2021 sequel; he worked with Curtis on “Trading Places” in 1983.

Murphy has previously been nominated for six Golden Globes, winning in 2007 for his performance in “Dreamgirls,” for which he was also Oscar-nominated. He’s also a five-time Emmy nominee, winning in 2020 for his stint hosting “Saturday Night Live,” and a three-time Grammy nominee, taking home the award for best comedy recording in 1984.

Some of Murphy’s most notable comedies include “Norbit,” “The Nutty Professor,” “Daddy Day Care” and “Trading Places,” as well as popular film series like “Coming to America,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Doctor Dolittle.”

Murphy is set to appear in a slew of new films in the coming years following a three-picture, first-look deal with Amazon Studios. The star will perform alongside co-stars Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sam Jay, and Nia Long in director Kenya Barris’ rom-com, “You People,” which Barris and Jonah Hill co-wrote.

‘Abbott Elementary,’ Joins ‘House of the Dragon,’ ‘Banshees’ As Big Winners At The Golden Globes

Tarnished Golden Globes Return to TV, and Hollywood Plays Along - The New York Times

Jan. 10 (UPI) —  Abbott Elementary, House of the Dragon, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans were the big winners at the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Tuesday.

Quinta Brunson won for Best Actress and Tyler James Williams for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Comedy for Abbott Elementary.

“Thank you for believing in a show about a group of teachers from Philadelphia. It has resonated with the world in a way that I could not even have imagined it would have,” said Brunson, who also created the series. “But let’s be real — I did imagine it. That’s why I sold it to you.”

Jeremy Allen White won the Globe for Best Actor in a TV Comedy for The Bear.

The Best Actress in a TV Drama prize went to Zendaya for Euphoria and the Best Actor in a TV Drama trophy went to Kevin Costner for Yellowstone.

House of the Dragon was named Best TV Drama.

Colin Farrell scored the Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Film for Banshees of Inisherin and told presenter Ana de Armas that he cried himself to sleep after watching her tragic Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde.

“It messed me up so bad. Not a joke, but you’re welcome to laugh!” he told the audience before thanking writer-director Martin McDonagh and co-star Brendan Gleeson for their extraordinary collaboration on not only Inisherin, but also 2008’s In Bruges. “You changed the trajectory of my life forever.”

McDonagh later won the Globe for Best Screenplay and the film was declared Best Comedy Film.

Austin Butler won the Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Film for Elvis and Steven Spielberg was voted Best Director for The Fabelmans, which also earned the Best Drama Film accolade.

Cate Blanchett, who was not present at the event, won the Best Actress in a Drama Film award for Tar and Angela Bassett won the Best Supporting Actress in a Film for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Ke Huy Quan and his co-star Michelle Yeoh earned the honors for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress in a Comedy Film, respectively, for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

“It’s been an amazing journey and an incredible fight to be here today,” Yeoh said of her career, which has spanned more than 40 years. “But I think it’s been worth it.”

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was named Best Animated Film and Julia Garner won Best Supporting Actress in a TV drama for Ozark.

Midway through the show, actor Sean Penn introduced a video message showing Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussing what the world was like when the Globes were established decades ago.

“The second World War wasn’t over yet, but the tide was turned, all knew who would win. There were still battles and tears ahead, it was then when the Golden Globes awards appeared to honor the best performers of 1943,” Zelenkyy said.

“It is now 2023. The war in Ukraine is not over yet but the tide is turning. And it is already clear who will win. There are still battles and tears ahead, but now I can definitely tell you who are the best in the previous year — it was you. The free people of the free world. Those who united around the support of the free Ukrainian people in our common struggle for freedom,” he added. “There will be no third world war, it is not a trilogy. Ukraine will stop the Russian aggression on our land.”

Jerrod Carmichael hosted the show, which was presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to recognize excellence in film and television. It aired on NBC.

Presenters included Billy Porter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Natasha Lyonne, Quentin Tarantino, Tracy Morgan, Claire Danes, Henry Golding, Hilary Swank, Jenna Ortega, Jennifer Hudson, Letitia Wright, Regina Hall, and Salma Hayek.

Jennifer Coolidge brought the house down when she took the stage to introduce the Best Supporting TV Actress nominees and ended up confessing her anxieties about speaking in public and how she almost backed out of participating.

“I got very, very nervous and then I thought, ‘I’m not doing this,'” the star recalled, explaining that after reassurances from the telecast’s producers that she would have all the support she needed, she agreed to help out. “I’m feeling really good right now because I haven’t screwed up yet.”

More than an hour later, she took home the Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for White Lotus.

Eddie Murphy received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Ryan Murphy was honored with the Carol Burnett Award.

The HFPA presents the awards each year.

NBC didn’t broadcast the event last year due to criticism of the organization for the lack of diversity in its ranks and transparency in its business practices.

The HFPA has since addressed these concerns and signed a one-year contract with NBC in September.
