BET Her announced a new interview and performance series in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop: “BET Her Live! Hosted by Yo-Yo.” Legendary Hip Hop artist Yo-Yo shines the spotlight on pioneering artists as they share their stories through conversation and song. Featuring Da Brat, MC Lyte, Lil’ Mo, and 702, all four 30-minute episodes of “BET Her Live! Hosted by Yo-Yo” will premiere Friday, August 11, 2023, beginning at 9 PM ET/PT on BET Her.
This is a banner year for Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary and an overall milestone for Black music in popular culture. Taped in Las Vegas, “BET Her Live! Hosted by Yo-Yo” will take viewers behind the curtain into the lives of these dynamic women who have shared so much with the world through their artistry. From Lil’ Mo on the balancing act of having a career with five children to Da Brat sharing infertility challenges that ultimately led to her becoming a new mom, along with 702’s story of surviving tragedy and MC Lyte pivoting to become the ultimate media mogul, the series will also feature performances of their classic hits.

Angus Cloud, the actor best known for playing the drug dealer Fezco “Fez” O’Neill on HBO’s “Euphoria,” has died at 25 years old.
“It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today,” Cloud’s family said in a statement. “As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.”
The statement continued, “We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone. We ask for privacy at this time as we are still processing this devastating loss.”
Cloud rose to prominence playing Fez on HBO’s Emmy-winning teen drama series “Euphoria.” He was a main character on the show’s first two seasons. His other acting credits included the films “North Hollywood” (2021) and “The Line”” (2023). He was recently cast opposite Melissa Berrera in a new horror movie at Universal Pictures from “Scream 6” directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Tracy Morgan is taking his standup to Max with a new original special, Tracy Morgan: Taking it Too Far, which is officially set to debut on the platform beginning Thursday, August 17.
The two-time Emmy-nominated actor and comedian is leaving it all on the stage in his first Max stand-up special, which was taped live in front of an audience at the Wilbur Theater in Boston, Massachusetts. As teased in the trailer, above, Tracy Morgan isn’t shying away from topics important to him, such as dating in his fifties along with the unexpected side effects that come with it.
Morgan’s dysfunctional family will also be discussed as well as his attempts at reversing gentrification in Brooklyn. Most notably though, Morgan will discuss his 2014 car accident that left him with several broken bones, a traumatic brain injury, and a substantial settlement from Walmart which he references in the trailer, above.
“My Tinder profile is a Walmart truck dropping off a bag of money on my front lawn,” Morgan tells the crowd who responds with plenty of laughter. Adding to the bit, Morgan says, “If y’all see me dancing in my draws in my kitchen on TikTok, all that Walmart money is gone.”
Entertaining audiences for 30 years, Morgan is known for his work on television, film, and in stand-up comedy. Among his most notable credits are his series regular run on Saturday Night Live and his Emmy-nominated role as Tracy Jordan in NBC‘s former comedy 30 Rock in which he starred alongside Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin.

Paul Reubens, the actor best known as his alter ego Pee-wee Herman, died Sunday. The official Pee-wee Herman accounts announced the news on Instagram.
The post included a note from Reubens apologizing to fans for keeping his battle with cancer a secret. Reubens said he had been battling cancer for six years. He was 70.
While a member of the Groundlings comedy troupe, Reubens created the character of Pee-wee. Pee-wee wore a suit and bow tie and spoke in a high-pitched voice with catchphrases like “I know you are but what am I” and “That’s so funny I forgot to laugh.”
Pee-wee was popularized in a stage show Reubens performed that introduced many characters who would later appear in his Saturday morning show Pee-wee’s Playhouse. HBO aired The Pee-wee Herman Show to mass audiences.
Reubens brought the character to the movies in the original film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, the first feature film directed by Tim Burton. The Pee-wee themes also began Danny Elfman’s career as a prolific film composer.
A sequel, Big Top Pee-wee saw Herman as a farmer when a traveling circus came to town. Reubens performed an updated Pee-wee Herman Show during a Pee-Wee revival in 2010.
A third Pee-wee film, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday premiered on Netflix in 2016. Reubens also played Pee-wee in Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie, Back to the Beach, episodes of 227 and Sesame Street, and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker video. He hosted Saturday Night Live as Pee-Wee in 1985.
Outside of the Pee-wee costume, Reubens appeared in the film Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Batman Returns, Matilda, Blow, and recently on What We Do in the Shadows and The Conners.
As a voice actor, Reubens played the voice of the spaceship in Flight of the Navigator, Lock in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jokey Smurf in the recent Smurfs movies, and various roles in television and video games.

ABC News Studios announced today “Sound of the Police,” the new Hulu Original documentary directed by Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson and co-directed by Valerie Scoon. Produced by Firelight Films for ABC News Studios, the feature-length documentary, which will have a special preview screening at the BlackStar Film Festival followed by its official world premiere at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, will begin streaming Friday, Aug. 11, only on Hulu.
“Sound of the Police” examines the fraught relationship between African Americans and the police, often rife with tension, fear, suspicion, and hostility on all sides. Framed by some of the most recent conflicts between Black Americans and police officers, which garnered national media attention, the film traces the country’s complex racial history that set the path for policing in Black communities and fuels the ongoing conflict between African American communities and law enforcement.
From the origins of the first police forces in the South during slavery to the mob violence that erupted against African Americans in the North after the great migration to the more recent high-profile cases forever etched in America’s collective conscience, “Sound of the Police” tells the story of a troubled, complex and volatile relationship and exactly how the country got here. The documentary also looks at contemporary efforts to confront and resolve that conflict.
“This film couldn’t be more timely, but it also closely connects to much of the history that I’ve explored in my past work – from the Civil War-era slave patrols, the advent of Jim Crow at the turn of the century, the uprisings against police brutality in the latter half of the 20th century to the many acts of police violence against African Americans that we’ve witnessed in the media in recent times,” said Nelson. “We’re thrilled to partner with ABC News Studios on this important project and look forward to sharing and discussing the film with audiences.”
“It’s been a rewarding experience working with Stanley and Firelight Films on this project,” said Scoon. “While much of my work as a director and producer has engaged with African American history, this film is particularly personal. Nelson is a leading documentarian of the African American experience. His films combine compelling narratives with rich historical detail to shine new light on the under-explored American past. He has received a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, five Primetime Emmy Awards, and lifetime achievement awards from the Television Academy and IDA. In 2013, Nelson received the National Medal in the Humanities from former President Obama. Some projects he has directed include “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution,” “Freedom Riders,” “Freedom Summer,” “The Murder of Emmett Till,” and “Attica” which earned Nelson a DGA Award and an Oscar nomination.
Scoon is an award-winning producer and filmmaker. Her most recent documentary, “Invisible History: Middle Florida’s Hidden Roots,” was broadcast nationally through American Public Television and won the 2021 Suncoast Regional Emmy for Best Historical Documentary. In addition to her independent documentary work, Scoon has worked as a creative executive for Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films, a story analyst for Creative Artists Agency, and a studio executive for Warner Bros. Her narrative credits in her capacity as an executive include the Golden Globe(R)-nominated “The Great Debaters,” the Emmy-nominated “Their Eyes Were Watching God” and Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X.” Scoon was also instrumental in the adaptation of “Beloved” by the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison.
“Sound of the Police” is produced by Firelight Films for ABC News Studios. The documentary is co-directed and produced by Nelson and Scoon. Today, Disney+ released a brand-new trailer and poster to celebrate the upcoming second season of Marvel Studios’ “Loki.” The first season of “Loki” is the most watched Marvel Studios series on Disney+, and the second season promises new excitement as it thrusts the infamous God of Mischief into a new set of adventures with the TVA.
The series stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Neil Ellice, with Jonathan Majors, Ke Huy Quan and Owen Wilson. Hulu today announced a series order of “Untitled Wayne Brady & Family Project” (working title) from Fremantle and A Wayne & Mandie Creative, the joint production company founded by Wayne Brady and Mandie Taketa. A launch date on the platform is forthcoming. The season will consist of eight episodes.
Everyone knows Wayne Brady – actor, comedian, host, singer and preeminent multihyphenate of this generation. But there’s more to the man seen onstage. What happens when an entertainer so iconic peels back the curtain on the realities of an unexpected life? In “Untitled Wayne Brady & Family Project” (working title), Brady has turned the term “modern family” on its head. He’s still best friends with his ex-wife, soulmate and business partner, Mandie Taketa. Together, they co-parent their 20-year-old daughter, Maile Brady, a student and aspiring artist, as well as running their production company, A Wayne & Mandie Creative (“Wayne Brady’s Comedy IQ”). Jason Fordham, Mandie’s life partner of 12 years, handles the family’s cinematography and post-production; and Mandie and Jason recently expanded their already blended family with the birth of their son, Sundance-Isamu.
With Brady at a sudden crossroads in his life, “Untitled Wayne Brady & Family Project” (working title) offers an intimate look into his blended family’s personal life – revealing unexpected points of view and values that most people (including his own family) have a hard time understanding. The series order comes on the heels of a banner year in the unscripted series space for Hulu, including the third season of “The Kardashians” and the recent order of 20 additional episodes of that show, as well as “The D’Amelio Show”‘s forthcoming third season. The streamer also recently announced “Vanderpump Villa,” starring and executive produced by Lisa Vanderpump.

Currently, Fremantle is in production on the 15th season of “Let’s Make A Deal,” for which Wayne has won a Daytime Emmy(R) Award for Outstanding Game Show Host. The company’s other preeminent series include global hits such as “America’s Got Talent,” which has remained the No. 1 show of the summer in total viewers since premiering in 2006. In addition, “American Idol,” has remained the No. 1 program in its Sunday timeslot for the 18-49 demo for four straight seasons. This past year, Fremantle also brought the iconic game show “Password” back to television with host Keke Palmer and recurring celebrity contestant, Jimmy Fallon. “Password” was the No. 1 new unscripted series for 2022 in total households.

Peppermint won over the hearts of millions of fans as a finalist on season nine of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Since her runner-up placement on the hit show, the queen has taken on the world of entertainment in a slew of successful ways.
From the studio to the small screen and even the Broadway stage, the performer has stacked her résumé with plenty of notable credits.
Although she’s played a ton of memorable roles throughout the years, the star is now playing a character based on herself in the new Netflix series Survival of the Thickest.
“Surprise, surprise… the character’s name is Peppermint! This is one of those shows that intersect with real life, even though it’s fiction. It is based on Michelle Buteau’s real-life experiences,” Peppermint tells Out.
Although Peppermint has achieved quite a bit since her time on Drag Race, she’s still pinching herself over the idea of having a character written for her.
“Peppermint plays herself! I can’t even believe it. I’m drowning in gratitude, to be honest with you. This was a Black transwoman who lived in Harlem who is a drag entertainer. So you know… I got it!”
The star is also bringing her signature wit to her very own stand-up special So-SIGH-ety Effects, which dropped a couple of months ago. In the comedy, Peppermint gives an authentic look at being a single Black transwoman in today’s world.
“When I had the opportunity to do this, I thought of all the other comedy specials that talk about transgender people, and the ones that are out there are really influential in the wrong way. They are quite transphobic. If some comic can get up and use his platform and his skill as a comedian to talk about something he knows nothing about, which is the trans community, then I’m going to use my skill as a drag entertainer to do something I know nothing about, which is stand-up comedy. If you’re going to go into my world, I’m going to go into yours.”
Besides her commitment to the arts, Peppermint is an out-and-loud activist that is constantly fighting for LGBTQ+ equality.
“Laws are being written and there’s an attempt to legislate us out of existence, which won’t happen. I want people to hear from a trans person’s mouth and perspective about the joy and the love that we feel and the connection that we have with one another. This is the year of comedy for me because I got my comedy special [and] I have Survival of the Thickest. I feel good about that.”

The series will debut exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world with three episodes on Friday, September 29, followed by weekly episodes, leading up to the epic season finale on Friday, November 3. The official teaser gives audiences a peek into life at Godolkin University, America’s only college exclusively for young-adult superheroes (run by Vought International). From the world of The Boys comes Gen V, which explores the training of the first generation of superheroes to know about Compound V, and that their powers were injected into them, rather than God-given. These young, competitive heroes put their physical and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the school’s highly coveted top ranking. They quickly come to learn that ambition comes with sacrifice, and the difference between right and wrong is not as clear as they once believed. When the university’s dark secrets come to light, the students must come to grips with what type of heroes they are going to become.

Fumi Abe is an LA-based Japanese-American standup comedian and writer who has performed on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and been a staff writer on The Late Late Show with James Corden. He has written for NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, the 2022 TIME100 Gala hosted by Simu Liu, and was part of the 2020 Comedy Central Digital Creators Program. He currently co-hosts the personal finance comedy podcast Cash Cuties with Steffie Baik and previously hosted Asian Not Asian, which was included in Vulture’s Comedy Podcast Roundup and The AV Club’s Podcast series highlights.
Darius Bennett
Darius Bennett, originally from Detroit, bought a spur of the moment one way ticket to LA in the middle of the night and has never looked back. Troy Bond
Troy Bond is a comedian and writer based in New York City, known for his sharp crowd work skills, first-rate joke writing and tongue-in-cheek impressions that helped to build his fast-growing audience of more than 2.5M across social platforms. Beginning his impressive rise in stand-up at 17, the now-27-year-old is booked nightly in the city on his days off from selling out headlining shows across the United States. Tackling everything from capitalism and big banks to superheroes and the wizarding world, Bond is a versatile comic to watch. In addition to his work on camera and on stage, he co-hosts the Bonding podcast with fellow comic Torey Cole.

Tommy Brennan
Tommy Brennan is a Midwest kid now living in Los Angeles and touring acclaimed comedy clubs across the country. He was recently named a Comic to Watch at the New York Comedy Festival. He regularly opens for Kelsey Cook and Becky Robinson, and was lucky enough to open for the late, great Louie Anderson as well. Along with his standup, you may know Tommy from his web series and podcast Roommates-In-Law (co-created with fellow comic Tim Smith), which is very silly and objectively a good time.
Nico Carney
Nico Carney is a Brooklyn based standup comedian, actor and writer. His standup covers his experiences as a trans man, growing up in Savannah, Georgia, and whatever else he finds silly and interesting. His monthly show at Club Cumming, Boy’s Club, was recently a headliner at the 2022 New York Comedy Festival and has been spun off into a popular podcast. He performs frequently at Union Hall, Club Cumming, Broadway Comedy Club, The Bell House and Greenwich Village Comedy Club. He was a part of Netflix’s Introducing…showcase at the 2022 Netflix Is A Joke Festival, has been featured on Comedy Central’s The Gag and is developing the half hour comedy Boys with Imagine Entertainment and Scott King.

Morgan Jay is a musician and comedian based in Los Angeles, Jay has made appearances on MTV’s Wild n Out, NBC, and Comedy Central. First generation American – he takes his musical influences from his Brazilian and Italian background and 90’s upbringing. He got his start in New York where he attended the Tisch School of the Arts while at the same time doing stand up in the backrooms and bars of the alternative New York comedy scene. He’s won multiple awards and festivals across the US but with millions of followers across his social media platforms he’s most recognized from his viral TikTok’s and IG posts.
Dan LaMorte
Dan LaMorte is a unique stand-up comedian, and that’s not just because he’s on the spectrum. His career started young, at 19 years old, after suffering a career-ending injury as a college baseball player. He appeared on Fox’s Red Eye, AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live, and Getting Doug with High. He released two albums, Not Enough Pieces and Infect Me Once, both are still popular plays on SiriusXM and have amassed over a million streams on Pandora. Over the course of three years, he would personally go on to lose over 185 pounds, become an ultra-runner, and inspire many of his fans to pursue their own weight loss journeys along the way. His story and transformation have been featured on FOX, Runner’s World, and Muscle and Fitness. He may have lost weight but his sense of humor is still fully intact. LaMorte is a fixture of the New York City comedy scene, and has been for the better part of a decade, you can regularly see him at the Comedy Cellar and The Stand comedy clubs.
Leslie Liao
Leslie Liao is a writer, performer, and stand-up comedian using the stage to reflect on her experience as a single Chinese-American female living in Los Angeles. She was recently named a 2023 JFL New Face, placed first in Bert’s Back Room’s LA’s Top Comic Competition, and was a finalist in the Crazy Woke Asians comedy festival. She’s worked on productions for E!’s Not Fancy, NBC’s Superstore, and Saturday Night Live, as well as studio films such as Central Intelligence, Office Christmas Party, and YouTube Red’s Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television. Her comedy has graced the stages of The Comedy Store, Laugh Factory, Hollywood Improv, Flappers, Westside Comedy Theater, HaHa Comedy Club, a random hotel she’s pretty sure is haunted, and many more.
Sam Morrison
Sam Morrison is a Brooklyn based comedian and writer. He just made his late-night television debut on Late Night With Seth Meyers and his solo show Sugar Daddy played Off Broadway for 14 weeks after three encore engagements and a sold out in London Run. Spencer Adamus is a stand-up comedian and actor from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. His stand up career began to take off when he won Winnipeg’s Funniest Person with a Day Job contest at Rumor’s comedy club back in 2017. He has since produced shows all over Winnipeg and became the booking manager of his own stand-up comedy room. Not only does he do stand-up comedy, but he does sketch comedy as well. He is one of the founding members of the sketch comedy group Family Dinner. Michelle Forrester is a Canadian comic and writer born in Montreal who has performed as an opener all over the country. In 2023, she moved to Toronto to complete an MFA in Screenwriting and Story Design at TMU. She has since co-created The Writers Room Sketch Show which was selected as a finalist for JFL’s Stand Up and Pitch Competition. In 2022, she recorded with JFL on the Montreal Originals Album Heavy Petting Zoo.
Dakota Ray Hebert
Dakota Ray Hebert is an actor/comedian/writer on the rise. On the small screen, Dakota co-stars in the CTV comedy Shelved. Glenn is a regular face on TV, having appeared on Mock The Week, The Russell Howard Hour, Guessable, Rob Delaney’s Stand Up Central, Richard Osman’s House of Games and The Stand-Up Sketch Show. His own BBC Radio 4 Stand Up series Glenn Moore’s Almanac, will be airing later this year. He also appears regularly on The News Quiz. His critically-acclaimed stand-up show Glenn, How Do You Like It, was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award. He also toured the UK with his follow up hit Edinburgh show Love Don’t Live Here Glenny More.
James Roque
James Roque is the Filipino step-son of New Zealand comedy. A veteran of the country’s comedy scene, he has climbed the ranks to become a household name in New Zealand. In 2019, his show Boy Mestizo garnered him a nomination for the Fred Award for Best Show at the NZ International Comedy Festival and went on to become his first stand-up comedy special which aired on national television and is available on Warner Bros. Through his comedy, he has amassed a loyal following on TikTok and Instagram. In 2023, he moved to Toronto, Canada with an eye on the future. He is part of cult-hit improv troupe Snort which continues to sell out its weekly show at Auckland’s Basement Theatre and in 2023 had a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is a co-founder of Proudly Asian Theatre, a theater company dedicated to showcasing more Asian-NZ stories onstage and has played the lead role of Sidu in Indian Ink Theatre Company’s Kiss the Fish, which has toured New Zealand and USA.
Amy Gledhill
Amy Gledhill is a comedian, actor, writer and director from Hull who brims with natural warmth and charm. One half of double Edinburgh nominated duo The Delightful Sausage. In 2023 her debut show, The Girl Before The Girl You Marry was nominated for Best Live Show at The National Comedy Awards. She was also nominated for Best Newcomer and Best Show at The Edinburgh Fringe – A never before attained accolade in the same year. Following a sold out run at Soho Theatre she is now embarking on a UK wide tour. With numerous BBC appearances, she is skilled in both comedic and dramatic acting with roles in Netflix’s Sex Education, BBC1’s Life, C4’s Somewhere Boy, BBC2’s Alma’s Not Normal, BBC3’s Starstruck, C4’s Hull Raisers and more.
Emmanuel Sonubi
Emmanuel Sonubi has only been on the comedy circuit for what feels like “five minutes” and he’s already garnering himself a reputation as the “one to watch”! Having gone from open spot to closing BBC’s Live at the Apollo in an incredibly short space of time, you will be seeing big things from this big man in the coming few years. His comedy career only started at the end of 2015 and has since become a regular favorite at the Comedy Store London, the MECCA of the UK comedy circuit. He made his TV debut on Comedy Central UK and was recently on QI and Pointless Celebrities, The Apprentice: You’re Fired, Rhod Gilbert’s Growing Pains for Dave, The John Bishop Show, The Stand-Up Sketch Show and Comedy Central Live on Comedy Central.
Tom Walker
Tom Walker is a performer, writer, improviser and clown. In 2016, he took out the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Best Newcomer Award with his show Beep Boop as well as Director’s Choice for Zanzoop as part of Feeble Minds. Tom’s 2019 show, Very Very, was another huge success across Melbourne, Sydney and Edinburgh; and was filmed as a comedy special for global streaming service Amazon Prime, released internationally in May 2020. He was a main ensemble member of Whose Line Is It Anyway?Australia for Foxtel’s Comedy Channel, which also aired to audiences on Network Ten. He also made guest appearances on Aaron Chen Tonight on the ABC. He recently filmed a couple of roles in the local Australian series of Drunk History, which can currently be viewed on 10play. He trained at the prestigious École Philippe Gaulier, sharpening up his skills across all areas of his performing life during the two years of training, graduating in 2015. In 2020, his latest comedy show Tom Walker Is Tim Walter played Adelaide Fringe. He can also be heard co-hosting the hilarious podcast bigsofttitty.png alongside Demi Lardne.

Caroline Baniewicz is an actor, musical comedian and viral content creator, who is currently full time at Barstool Sports writing and starring in sketches for their socials. She also created the Barstool sketch show Please End This. She starred in the short film Unessential which premiered at the Chelsea Film Festival and sold out Gramercy Theater last fall with her band, Pup Punk.
Cliff Benfield
Cliff Benfield was born and raised in New York City, he is an animator and comedy writer who gained notable recognition through his captivating short sketches on his social media account, Space Skits. Last summer, his creativity made waves with the premiere of his Adult Swim Smalls series, titled Indolent Alien. Recently, he successfully completed a series of comedic shorts for Bento Box, showcasing his remarkable ability as a storyteller and comedian. Next up, he will embark on a new short series for Funny or Die. Cliff’s work is characterized by his ability to create absurd yet relatable original characters and craft sharp, witty dialogue.

Currently living in Los Angeles, the Seattle native has found a way to carve out a niche for herself as a comedian, singer-songwriter, and lover of dogs. Devin Gant is an actor, writer, editor and director living in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been shown in short film festivals in Brooklyn and Philadelphia and has been featured multiple times in Vulture Magazine’s Funny Videos of the Month showcase. He performs monthly as a member of the New York sketch comedy team Young Douglas, is a Digital Editor for VICE Media, an Assistant Editor with Saturday Night Live, and has appeared on several comedy podcasts Everyone is Hot, Bit Heavy, and Repeater.
