‘Survivor’s Remorse’ To End After 4 Seasons On Starz

It’s the end of the road for Survivor’s Remorse.

The current fourth season of the Starz basketball comedy will be its last, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The season finale on Sunday will now serve as a series finale.

“We have been fortunate to work with incredible talents like Mike O’Malley, the executive producers and our cast on this very special show for four seasons,” Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said Tuesday in a statement. “While this may be the end of the Calloways’ story, we do believe that the themes Survivor’s Remorseconfronted over the seasons, through a unique mix of humor and sober observation, will be appreciated for the insightful, heartfelt way they were addressed. We are proud of the show.”

The half-hour comedy centered on Cam Calloway (Jessie T. Usher) and his family after he signs a professional basketball contract and moves to Atlanta to begin his NBA career. RonReaco Lee, Erica Ash, Teyonah Parris, Tichina Arnold, Robert Wu and Meagan Tandy also star.

The project marked one of NBA star LeBron James’ first forays into scripted television. James executive produced with his producing partner Maverick Carter through James’ SpringHill Entertainment banner. Mike O’Malley (Shameless) created the half-hour and served as showrunner through his O’Malley Ink shingle. Other exec producers included TV veteran Tom Werner of Werner Entertainment, Paul Wachter, Victor Levin and Hilton Smith. Starz produced the comedy.

Since its 2014 premiere, Survivor’s Remorse had been warmly embraced by critics, including THR’s Daniel Fienberg, who called it “one of the cleverest, profane, most provocative comedies on TV.” Earlier this year, Fienberg praised the fourth season for not shying away from potent issues and being “emboldened to try new things in terms of style and tone.”

For Starz, Survivor’s Remorse was one part of the pay cabler’s strategy to reach underserved audiences like African-Americans (50 Cent’s Power) and women (Outlander). However, ratings for Survivor’s Remorse had dipped in season four. With three days of delayed viewing factored in, the series had been averaging just under 600,000 viewers.

After moving its originals from Saturdays to Sundays last year, Starz is next setting its sights on Latino audiences with the recently ordered half-hour Vida. The pay cabler also recently greenlighted another half-hour original series, Sweetbitter, which hails from exec producer Brad Pitt and is based on the best-selling book by Stephanie Danler. Starz’s originals comedy slate also includes Ash vs. Evil Dead, which returns for season three in early 2018.

On This Day In Comedy… In 1998 ‘Holy Man’ Starring Eddie Murphy Was Released!

On this day in comedy on October 9, 1998, Holy Man by Buena Vista Pictures

Starring Eddie Murphy as a smiling, happy, white robe-wearing fellow enlisted by two TV executives to help sales, Holy Man skewers the home shopping field.  Jeff Goldblum is the exec out of ideas and so Kelly Preston is brought in to help him out.  They don’t like each other at first until they run across Murphy who somehow makes everybody feel good by the sheer will of his positive personality.  Once he’s seen on their low rated shopping show items start selling out and it’s obvious it’s because of Murphy.  Soon the decision is made to give him his own show, nut by the time it’s set to debut Murphy’s happy guy has grown weary of all the fans and attention.  He’s now unhappy man and in efforts to set things right Goldblum cancels the show and Murphy goes back to anonymity and happiness.

Misdirected by Stephen Herek, Holy Man was a critical failure.  The film is loaded with cameos from the likes of James Brown, Betty White, Dan Marino, Soupy Sales and others, but it just didn’t connect with audiences.  Even Murphy blasted it publicly as being a “horrendous movie”.

Holy Man grossed $12,069,719 at the domestic box office on a budget of $60 million dollars.

It’s the latest look at the new film since Disney released the first teaser in April. The new footage debuted during halftime of the NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears.

The studios also released the latest poster for the film, in which Luke Skywalker takes center stage, on Monday.

Michael B. Jordan Superhero Family Drama ‘Raising Dion’ Set at Netflix

Following more than a yearlong process, Netflix is moving forward with superhero family drama Raising Dion.Based on the short film and comic book of the same name from commercial/music video director Dennis Liu, the 10-episode project is about an African-American single mother who discovers her young son has multiple and constantly changing abilities.

Raising Dion follows single mother Nicole Reese, who rears her son Dion after the death of her husband Mark (Michael B. Jordan). The normal dramas of bringing up a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several magical, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.

Michael B. Jordan is attached to executive produce and appear in the series. Carol Barbee (Unreal, Judging Amy), who penned the pilot, will serve as showrunner and exec produce. Liu will exec produce and direct the pilot. Jordan exec produces via his Outlier Society Productions banner. Macro’s Charles D. King, Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks will exec produce alongside Kenny Goodman and Michael Green (Logan, American Gods). Raising Dion is being produced in-house at Netflix and comes as the streamer continues to make a push for ownership. The streaming giant will distribute the series in more than 190 countries around the world. A premiere date has not been determined.

“I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I’m excited to partner with Netflix, who I know shares that commitment,” Liu said. “More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view, and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”

Added Cindy Holland, vp originals at Netflix: “We haven’t seen this type of superhero story before — an origin myth full of imagination, wonder and adventure, all grounded in the experiences of a modern single mother. Michael B. Jordan is an exciting and dynamic talent, and I’m excited to see him, Macro, Carol and the team translate Dennis’ unique vision to television.”

Rumblings about Raising Dion first surfaced in April 2016, with Liu and a different producing team attached and a series pickup pending pilot script approval. As of last October, Judy McCreary (Law & Order: SVU) was initially attached as showrunner. However, when 1980s-set sci-fi drama Stranger Things — featuring Millie Bobby Brown’s kid-with-powers character Eleven — bowed, a decision was made to retool Raising Dion to avoid any potential overlap with Netflix’s breakout hit. McCreary then exited and Barbee — who briefly ran Lifetime’s Unreal — was brought in to rework it. Following a short writers room hiatus, the drama was back on track as of November 2016, and Jordan joined at the start of 2017. Casting started in February, though Jordan remains the only on-screen actor set to appear in the series.

Raising Dion comes as Netflix has found success with its Marvel partnership. The comic book powerhouse has delivered a slate of superhero projects including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and miniseries The Defenders as well as the upcoming Punisher.

For Jordan, meanwhile, the Creed actor has continued to push into producing for the small screen. He has an overall deal at Skydance Television (though Raising Dion is outside of that pact) and has developed multiple projects. This is first series pickup as an exec producer. His TV acting roles include Parenthood, Friday Night Lights and The Wire. He next appears in the HBO telepic Fahrenheit 451, which he also exec produces. On the big screen, his roles include Marvel-inspired feature Fantastic Four.

While Doing Stand Up, NeNe Leakes Blasts Female Heckler With Rape Comment

Nene Leakes let loose on a female audience member. While performing at a stand-up comedy show in Oakland last Saturday, Nene told an audience member she hoped she’d get raped by an Uber driver on her trip back home. You can hear the audience booing the Real Housewives of Atlanta star just before she claps back with the rape comment. It’s unclear what the woman said to Nene, but it must have hit pretty hard.

This is the second time in a week that NeNe has gotten into a conflict with someone. Nene lashed out on Zolciak’s daughter, Brielle Bierman and called her a racist after Brielle posted a video from NeNe’s house showing roaches in the bathroom. NeNe replied to the video via Twitter saying:

“We don’t have roaches! If you found 1, u brought it with u or it fell outta yo funky pu**y! Please know I will get You all the way together when you start f**king wit me and mine! Go somewhere and let the air outta those fake lips, fake titties and fake ass because you will never be @kylejenner.”

“You had to stoop so low and be so disgusting #racisttrash #jealous #KKK #thirsty you better run yo ass back to a child’s place.”

Marlon Wayans And Busta Rhymes Bust Out Into Freestyle Battle

TMZ recently caught Busta Rhymes battling Marlon Wayans with some fierce bars on camera.

The two were standing outside surrounded by a cheering crowd in the clip. Wayans apparently sparked the battle by calling Busta out. Busta responded with, “You call me out and you ain’t got no bars,” adding,” You ain’t got no bars. Your forehead is looking like a bunch of bumper cars.”

Wayans comes back with some heat, “Yo Busta. Your s*** is stagnant. I thought you was 8 months pregnant,” which garnered cheers from the crowd.

Busta jumped into his next barrage of rhymes, “You just a greedy whore. Got no pity for. How many n***as like you? That stay down with sh*tty whores.” Wayans countered by saying the veteran rapper looked like the “black Shrek.” It looked like Busta had enough at that point as the clip came to a close.

This isn’t the first time the two worked together. Back when Marlon was on his show “The Wayans Bros.,” Busta made a cameo in the episode titled “Busta Saves the Day” which aired in 1998. Busta helped Marlon and his brother Shawn score some tickets to his concert in the episode.

On This Day In Comedy… In 1980 Comedian, Actor, Rapper, Host, Producer, Nick Cannon Was Born!

On this day in comedy on October 8, 1980, Comedian, Actor, Rapper, Host, Producer, Nicholas Scott “Nick” Cannon was born in San Diego, California

Cannon got his start in comedy on his father’s cable access channel in Charlotte, North Carolina.  He was 11 years old and itching for more.  All during high school, his mother would take young Nick to various nightclubs in San Diego (where she lived and Nick divided his time between his divorced parents) and he’d manage to get stage time.  Even though he was underage he’d run in when his name was announced, do his set and run out the exit door, getting nowhere near the bar.  This worked out fine until he graduated high school and then it was off to Hollywood.

Nick Cannon’s first break came doing warm-up and making guest appearances for the show, All That on Nickelodeon.    The teenager was the perfect fit for the youth-targeted network.  He soon moved from in front of the camera to behind it as well.   He hosted The Nick Cannon Show and in 2005 produced and hosted Wild ‘N Out, the MTV improv comedy show that made household names out of Kevin Hart, Katt Williams, Affion Crockett and Corey Holcomb.   He then kept it going by jockeying to NBC to host their hit, America’s Got Talent and created his own sketch comedy series, Incredible Crew featuring teenagers.

Cannon proved his was multi-faceted.  He entered the world of music with his rap group, “Da G4 Dope Bomb Squad” and along with friend, Steve Groves, went on the road as an opening act.  In 2001 he signed with Jive records and released an album and worked on the Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius film soundtrack.  He established himself with the hit single, “Gigolo” with R. Kelly before forming his own label, “Can-I-Ball” Records in 2005.  In 2009 he cancelled that label and replaced it with “N’Credible Entertainment”; where he collaborated with other rap artists and released a series of song parodies and a mixtape.  He also did radio with a syndicated countdown show for CBS Radio.

Besides all his other endeavors and touring as a stand-up comedian, acting was also part of Cannon’s empire building.   Cannon has starred in a number of films including, Drumline, Love Don’t Cost a Thing, Roll Bounce and Goal II: Living the Dream.   He has managed Soulja Boy and Amber Rose, just to name a few and has been a multiple award nominee, winning the Nickelodeon’s Kid Choice Award in 2001 for Favorite Television Actor (The Nick Cannon Show), The Hollywood Film Festival Award in 2006 for Ensemble of the Year (Bobby) and the 2012 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor (Up All Night).
