Halle Berry To Star In ‘Jagged Edge’ Remake At Sony Pictures
Sony Pictures is in the early stages of mounting a remake of the 1985 thriller Jagged Edge, as a star vehicle for Halle Berry. The effort is being led by Steven Bersch, the Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group head who took over the genre arm Screen Gems. This one could very well be a standard Sony release, but they’re still working that out. The project is a priority and the studio has begun the search for the right writer to draft the new version.
Matti Leshem and Doug Belgrad will produce it. Scott Strauss will oversee for the studio.
Directed by Richard Marquand from a Joe Eszterhas script, the original starred Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges and Robert Loggia, latter of whom got an Oscar nomination. In the original, a San Francisco heiress is brutally murdered in her remote beach house. Her dashing newspaper publisher husband Jack is accused of committing the gruesome crime. He hires lawyer Teddy Barnes to defend him, and their chemistry spills into an affair. Even though the lawyer is falling in love, can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t quite right with the case, with the killer sending anonymous notes pecked out on an old typewriter. Is Jack the key to a happy future for the lawyer if she can get him acquitted in a courtroom, or is he a sociopath? The original was released when sexually charged whodunits were the rage. With TV minting money relaunching classic series like Roseanne, refashioning 80s concepts for price-minded updates seems a clever idea.
Weimaraner Republic Pictures’ Leshem has had success in female-driven thrillers, and Belgrad as an exec supervised the sleeper shark hit The Shallows, which made for an easy team up on this.
Berry was last seen in Kingsman: Golden Circle and Kidnap, and starred in the X-Men franchise and won her Oscar for Monster’s Ball. She’s repped by Management 360 and WME.

‘Hidden Figures’ Series In Development At National Geographic
CREDIT: COURTESY OF 20TH CENTURY FOX
Nat Geo is developing a series inspired by the film “Hidden Figures,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The film was itself based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, which told the true story of the black female mathematicians who were instrumental in the early days of the American space program. The 2016 film starred Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including best picture, and grossed over $235 million worldwide.
The TV project, which is in the early stages of development, will be executive produced by Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping of Chernin Entertainment, both of whom executive produced the film. National Geographic will also produce.
Should the project go to series, it would be the latest in Nat Geo’s continuing push into scripted fare. The cable network, a joint venture between National Geographic and 21st Century Fox, is about to debut the second season of the scripted series “Genius” on April 24. The first season–which was nominated for 10 Emmys–starred Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein, while Season 2 will see Antonio Banderas playing Pablo Picasso. Nat Geo also debuted the Iraq War miniseries “The Long Road Home” back in November.
On the development side, Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to executive produce a series based on “The Right Stuff,” also about the early days of the space program, that is currently in the works at Nat Geo. Other scripted dramas in development include: “The Birth of the Pill: How Four Crusaders Reinvented Sex and Launched a Revolution,” adapted from Jonathan Eig’s 2014 book of the same name; “The Hot Zone,” based on the international bestseller by Richard Preston about the origins of the Ebola virus; and a scripted series based on the founding of the National Geographic Network itself, telling the story of how a National Geographic field producer is put in charge of two production teams shooting Nat Geo’s first TV documentaries in Siberia and Australia in the 1960s.

Jordan Peele To Produce Lorena Bobbitt Docu-Series For Amazon
Amazon has greenlit a documentary series on Lorena Bobbitt with Jordan Peele attached as an executive producer.
The four-part series, titled “Lorena,” will delve into the notorious case of husband and wife John and Lorena Bobbitt. In 1993, Lorena made headlines around the world when she cut off her husband’s penis. She later claimed that she did so after he raped her. The series will examine how the case laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage. It will also explore the national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America.
“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele said. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.
Josh Rofé will direct the series. Peele and Win Rosenfeld will executive produce for Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. Rofé will also executive produce along with Steven J. Berger for Number 19, Jenna Santoianni and Tom Lesinski for Sonar Entertainment.
“Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project,” said Heather Schuster, head of unscripted for Amazon Originals. “‘Lorena’ reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong.”
Peele is coming off of an Oscar win for best original screenplay for his film “Get Out.” He is also the co-creator of the TBS comedy series “The Last OG” starring Tracy Morgan. Peele is also set to executive produce a reboot of “Twilight Zone” for CBS All Access and “Lovecraft Country” for HBO.

‘Black-Ish’ Creator Kenya Barris Plotting Exit From ABC Deal After Recent Clashes
Kenya Barris could be on his way out at ABC Studios, where he currently has an overall production deal.
Sources have told The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the news, that Barris is “actively trying to get out of his overall deal with ABC Studios,” where he has been since 2015.
Three years remain on the deal he re-signed in 2017. Not only is he plotting to leave, but Netflix, which snagged Shonda Rhimes from ABC and snatched Ryan Murphy from Fox, is courting Barris.
This comes as ABC and Barris clashed on a politically-themed episode of the series, which ABC pulled from it schedule. The episode would have featured “Anthony Anderson’s patriarch Dre caring for his infant son on the night of an intense thunderstorm that keeps the whole household awake. Dre attempts to read the baby a bedtime story, but abandons that plan when the baby continues to cry. He instead improvises a bedtime story that, over the course of the episode, conveys many of Dre’s concerns about the current state of the country. The episode covers multiple political and social issues. In one scene, Dre and oldest son Junior (Marcus Scribner) argue over the rights of athletes to kneel during the performance of the national anthem at football games.” While ABC said it was pulled due to “creative differences” in a mutual decision THR’s sources say otherwise.
Despite having a deal since 2015, only one series other than black-ish has succeeded so far through his ABC deal, grown-ish. The black-ish spinoff, which recently got renewed for a bigger second season, was developed for ABC before being sent to ABC’s younger-skewing sister station, Freeform.
It has passed on several Barris pilots, including the political family comedy, Libby & Malcolm, which was set to star Courtney B. Vance, Felicity Huffman, Jahi Winston and Sayeed Shahidi.
black-ish hasn’t been officially renewed for a new season at ABC, but is expected to be a sure bet for renewal.
Barris’ Bright Futures, starring Lilly Singh and Shameik Moore, got a late pilot order at NBC. He’s also been busy writing for film. He co-wrote Girls Trip, is writing on the new Shaft film which recently wrapped and is attached to a Coming to America remake.
As THR points out, if Barris leaves, ABC will have lost its top drama (Rhimes) and comedy (Barris) producers.

Dave Chappelle Sued By Man Who Threw Banana Peel At Him
Dave Chappelle has been hit with a lawsuit. A man named Christian Englander, who threw a banana peel at the comedian, during a 2015 performance in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is suing him and his presumed bodyguard.
Englander says he was struck twice by Chappell’s bodyguard as he was being restrained. Englander is white and says throwing the banana peel at Chappelle, was not racially motivated. He says that he threw the peel at the comedian because he was upset by something that he said.
At the time of the incident, Englander faced charges of battery and disturbing the peace. Chappelle would not participate in the prosecution, so the charges were dropped.

Cardi B Set As First-Ever Co-Host Of ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’

The delightfully charming chart-topper, who recently won Best New Artist and Best New Hip Hop Artist at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, will join Fallon on stage throughout the program. She will chat with Fallon and perform in support of her upcoming debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” then stick around to interview the evening’s other guests alongside Fallon.
This will mark Cardi B’s third visit to “The Tonight Show.” She appeared last year on Dec. 20 as a guest and performed “No Limit” with G-Eazy in September.
The Bronx native made history in 2017 with the release of her breakout single “Bodak Yellow.” The now 5x-platinum smash hit spent three historic weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, making it the first solo #1 by a female hip-hop artist in nearly two decades.

A$AP Rocky and Cardi B)” and “MotorSport” by Migos, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, both of which reached the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Those two songs, in addition to “Bodak Yellow,” made Cardi B the first female rapper to land her first three entries in the chart’s top 10 as well as the first female artist to achieve the same on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. As if that weren’t enough, with the release of “Bartier Cardi” and Bruno Mars’ “Finesse (Remix) [Feat. Cardi B],” which is now certified 2x platinum, Cardi B made history yet again surpassing Beyoncé as the first woman to have five top 10 singles simultaneously on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Her highly anticipated debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” is set to be released April 6.
