Kevin Hart Plans Next Film Titled ‘Extreme Job’ Comedy Remake At Universal

Tracy Oliver, who wrote ‘Girls Trip’ and ‘Little,’ is on board to pen the script for the remake of the Korean hit.

Kevin Hart and CJ Entertainment have banded together to remake Korean crime comedy Extreme Job.

Tracy Oliver, who penned Girls Trip and Little, will write the screenplay for the project, which just landed at Universal Pictures.

Hart is eyeing the project as a starring vehicle and will produce via his HartBeat production banner. CJ Entertainment, which produced the original, will also produce, with CJ’s head of U.S. productions Francis Chung producing. Oliver will also be a producer.

Extreme, now the biggest-grossing movie in Korean box office history after its release in January of this year, centers on a team of narcotics detectives that goes undercover in a fried chicken joint to stake out an organized crime gang. Things take an unexpected turn when the detectives’ chicken recipe suddenly transforms the rundown restaurant into the hottest eatery in town.

Fred Lee, CJ Entertainment’s Los Angeles-based director of development, and Ini Chung, CJ’s Seoul-based director of development, are co-producing and will oversee development of the project with HartBeat’s Carli Haney.

Hart, CJ and Universal are already collaborating on female-driven dramedy Bye, Bye, Bye, a remake of CJ’s 2011 hit Sunny.

Hart’s Upside, a remake of the French movie The Intouchables, grossed over $108 million when it was released by STX in January. The actor voices a character in Universal’s Secret Life of Pets 2 and is shooting the sequel to Jumanji.

Oliver next has The Sun is Also a Star, the adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s YA novel for which she penned the screenplay, opening May 17.

Hart is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Schreck Rose. Oliver is repped by ICM Partners, Artists First, and Myman Greenspan.

Showtime Picks Up Comedy Series ‘Black Monday’ For A Second Season!

SHOWTIME announced today that it has picked up a second season of its series BLACK MONDAY. The comedy about a motley crew of underdogs causing the worst stock market crash in the history of Wall Street stars and is executive produced by Emmy® nominee and Golden Globe® winner Don Cheadle. Two-time Tony® Award nominee and Grammy® winner Andrew Rannells (Girls) and Regina Hall (Girls Trip) star in and produce the series.  BLACK MONDAY is created by showrunners and executive producers David Caspe (Happy Endings) and Jordan Cahan (My Best Friend’s Girl). Emmy®nominees Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (PreacherSuperbadFuture Man) serve as executive producers. BLACK MONDAY will resume production on 10 episodes later this year for a 2020 debut on the network.

BLACK MONDAY mines big comedy from the greed, the style, the music, and the excess of the ’80s, but it’s also sneaky smart in its social commentary about that era – and indirectly, our current era as well,” said Gary Levine, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. “We can’t wait to see what inspired depravity David and Jordan will cook up in season two.”

A co-production between SHOWTIME and Sony Pictures Television, BLACK MONDAY takes viewers back to October 19, 1987 – aka Black Monday. To this day, no one knows who “caused it” … until now. It’s the fictional story of how a group of outsiders took on the blue-blood, old-boys club of Wall Street and ended up crashing the world’s largest financial system, a Lamborghini limousine and the glass ceiling.

CBS All Access and Jordan Peele will spend some more time in another dimension.

The streamer has renewed Peele and Simon Kinberg’s Twilight Zone revival for a second season. The pickup comes five episodes into the anthology’s run; new installments are released each Thursday.

“Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg’s reimagining of The Twilight Zone is off to an amazing start on CBS All Access, driving the most viewers on its premiere day for an original series to date,” said Julie McNamara, executive vp original content for the streaming service. “Jordan, Simon, the creative team and cast have done a phenomenal job translating the series’ legacy of socially conscious storytelling for modern-day audiences. They are master storytellers, and we look forward to bringing fans further into The Twilight Zone with a second season.”

Just how many viewers the premiere day of The Twilight Zone delivered isn’t known; like other streaming services, CBS All Access doesn’t release average viewership numbers for its series. The streamer also hasn’t set a premiere date or episode count for season two.

In addition to executive producing, Peele also appears onscreen as each episode’s narrator, a la Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling in the original series. Kinberg, Win Rosenfeld, Audrey Chon, Glen Morgan, Carol Serling and Rick Berg also executive produce.

The revival boasts an impressive roster of actors, with Adam Scott, Sanaa Lathan, Steven Yeun, Kumail Nanjiani, Greg Kinnear, Allison Tolman, John Cho and Tracy Morgan having already made appearances. Coming episodes feature Ginnifer Goodwin, Zazie Beetz, Taissa Farmiga, Chris O’Dowd, Seth Rogen, Rhea Seehorn, Jessica Williams and DeWanda Wise, among others.

The Twilight Zone is part of a CBS All Access roster of originals that includes The Good Fight (recently renewed for a fourth season), Star Trek: Discovery and spinoff Short Treks, Strange Angel, Tell Me a Story and No Activity. The service also has animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, a Trek series starring Patrick Stewart, true-crime drama Interrogation, dark comedy Why Women Kill and an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand on tap.

The stars of the Fox sketch comedy series In Living Color took a walk back in time Saturday, to share details on how the 1990s hit came about during a special screening at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The hit comedy was a result of the then-fledgling Fox network’s desire to “push the envelope,” said Keenan Ivory Wayans, who created, wrote and starred in the program from 20th Century Fox Television.

During an onstage discussion, Wayans recalled meeting with Fox execs after showing them his 1988 feature, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.

“The TV folks invited me to meet them. I wasn’t looking [to do TV], I wanted to make movies,” said Wayans who was joined by In Living Color alums Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davidson and David Alan Grier.

Wayans recalled that network execs bantered the idea of him creating a show. At one point, a network suit uttered words that would make its way into the show’s theme song: “Then they said, ‘You can do what you wanna do.’ And that’s why it’s in the theme song, ‘You can do what you wanna do — In Living Color.’”

The screening was timed to mark the 25th anniversary of the show’s finale in 1994, as part of the Tribeca TV section.

Prior to the onstage talk, the festival screened the pilot episode of In Living Color, which featured two memorable skits that would return in later episodes of the series, including “The Homeboy Shopping Network” featuring Damon and Keenan Wayans as well as “Men On Films.”

Fans of the show will recall the latter featured Damon Wayans and Grier as gay critics.

“I think the sketch could be done now,” said Wayans. “I’ve evolved since then, but there was never any malice from our portrayals — at least from my perspective at that time, but it was definitely of that time… We have more information now about gay culture, so we could make it even funnier. We’re talking about a time when gay people didn’t have a voice… The intent of In Living Color was to include everyone. We did handicap characters, we did everyone.”

Before In Living Color, Grier said there had been talk of an African-American answer to Saturday Night Live, which was still predominantly white.

“Nobody had done it, but people were talking about it,” said Grier. “Keenan was the one who actually did it… America needed something new and In Living Color was the thing.”

Though Fox was on board to ‘push the envelope,’ the cast did have their run-ins with network censors.

Disagreements with the network over creative latitude were reportedly part of the reason Keenan Wayans stepped back from the series, though he only hinted at that during Saturday’s conversation, noting that Fox was
particularly tolerant in the show’s “first couple of years.”

He added that during the creative process, they would use words they already knew were “no-gos,” only to step back to something that was on the surface less outrageous, which they wanted all the time.

“We used to have fun with the censors,” said Keenan Wayans. “Sometimes during the table reads, we’d start laughing really hard and the censor would say, ‘you can’t say that’ and then we’d give them [something else]. One time, they said we couldn’t say, ‘kayak city’ so we said, can you say, ‘toss your salad?’ and they said, ‘yes.’”

Continuing, he added: “To their credit, especially in the first couple years, they [worked with me]. I’d say, ‘Don’t tell me what I can’t say, let’s talk about how I can say it.’”

In Living Color not only advanced the careers of the Wayans, it also marked a cornerstone for the likes of Jim Carrey, who appeared in all five seasons of the show as well as others including Jennifer Lopez, who was a “Fly Girl,” the women who danced on a stage at the beginning of the show and between sketches.

Tommy Davidson recalled an early conversation with Carrey who noted the historical significance of In Living Color. “Jim from the very beginning said that this was history and that the show would stand the test of time. I didn’t see it at the time, but he did.”

Any anticipation that there might be an In Living Color reboot announced Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival never surfaced during the conversation. The show had been set to reboot in 2012, but was nixed in 2013. Still, the historic and comical significance of the series resonated with the packed house at Tribeca’s Festival
Hub.

Jay-Z Brings Out Nas, Pays Tribute to Nipsey Hussle At Webster Hall

Jay-Z and Nas, living hip-hop legends and former arch foes, stood side by side on the Webster Hall stage Friday night, after 10 fiery minutes of swapping some of their best verses.

“I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to duplicate that again,” a tuxedo-clad Jay told the sold-out hometown crowd, about a third of the way through the two-hour-plus “B-Sides 2” all-rarities concert that he staged on the opening night of the iconic venue. “But that was special.”

He was right on both counts. For starters, the legendary Brooklyn and Queens rappers don’t live in the city anymore, so the opportunities for their pairings are fewer and farther in between. And as their lives have evolved — both are in their late 40s — so too has their hometown and hip-hop itself. Nostalgia, though, proved to be an intoxicating elixir. During those 10 minutes, the two former Kings of New York put on a master class in showmanship and lyrical acumen — and displayed a rooted sense of accomplishment.

Jay dug deep into the vault on multiple occasions on this night, but the Nas team-up was the centerpiece. “Success,” the duo’s second collaboration, from Jay’ “American Gangster” album, set the table for he and Nas — also clad in sleek suits, as were the backing band and DJs Young Guru and Just Blaze — to string together a series of songs from their debut albums — “Reasonable Doubt” and “Illmatic,” respectively. Those two projects, along with the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ready to Die,” initiated a renaissance for the New York hip-hop scene in the mid-1990s. Nas kicked things off with “The World Is Yours” and Jay jumped on the track with a verse of his from “Dead Presidents,” which sampled the former song and at one point in their careers served as a point of a contention among a greater feud. Then Nas teed things up for Jay again as his “ N.Y. State of Mind” made way for “Bring It on.”

While the entire show was a trip down memory lane for Jay and his diehard fans, the rapper continues to be as shrewd with his decisions as he is with his rhymes. Each hour of his two-hour plus set featured a topical new freestyle. Between “Some How Some Way” and “So Ambitious,” Jay took the time to eulogize the late Nipsey Hussle.

“Gentrify your own hood before these people do it/ Claim eminent domain and have your people move in/ That’s a small glimpse into what Nipsey was doing…. I told Neighborhood Nipsey stay close/ There’s a 100 million dollars on your schedule, lay low/ Tell your team to be on point in the places that they go/ I never dreamed he’d get killed in the place that he calls home.”

Apart from that somber moment, the crowd erupted as Jay went deeper into his catalog (“D’Evils,” “Pump It Up Freestyle,” and “Allure,” just to name a few) and fans chanted “Hova!,” one of his many nicknames. Friends, from Dave Chappelle and Fabolous to basketball greats Jamal Crawford and LeBron James, were seen mouthing lyrics in unison to his songs. The newly renovated Webster Hall was on theme too, with a disco-ball-styled Rocafella logo (Jay’s label) hanging high above the floor; the venue’s entry ways and downstairs bar have been reconfigured and spiffed up, but the iconic main room is largely the same. The setting served Jay’s purpose well: It’s a place to look back while also looking ahead.

Shortly after Nas left the stage, Jay brought on another former foe: Cam’Ron, who joined him for the Harlem rapper’s “Welcome to New York City.” (Later in the show, Cam performed the Diplomats’ “I Really Mean It” with Jim Jones, straining the renovated balcony.) Afterward, addressing the crowd, Jay shouted the two men out while harkening back to their past battles.

We wasted years bickering,” he said. “They not my enemies — they my brothers.”

You can’t rewrite history but you can learn from it, and with Friday night’s retrospective show, Jay and his friends rebranded and celebrated the youthful genius and controversies that put them on these stages in the first place.
