The Dallas comedy scene is reeling after the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Henry Jose Cruz, a rising comedy star whose life was cut short in a tragic hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning, August 23, 2025.
Cruz, 29, had just wrapped a performance at Shark’s Comedy Club in Deep Ellum—a venue where he had blossomed over the past three years into one of the city’s most beloved comedic voices. Known for his magnetic stage presence and ability to turn personal struggles into punchlines, Cruz was walking home with friends when a speeding vehicle veered off the I-345 exit ramp and struck him near Elm Street. The driver fled the scene, and Cruz was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Eyewitnesses described the vehicle as a dark-colored car that jumped the curb and barreled into the group. “We had plenty of time to cross the street,” said Noah Robertson, owner of Shark’s Comedy Club and a close friend of Cruz. “Then out of nowhere, a car came barreling down… Henry went flying through the air. It was surreal”.
Tributes have poured in from across the Dallas-Fort Worth comedy community. Robertson remembered Cruz as “a very genuine guy… He loved making people laugh. He was just a really nice, good person, and sometimes that’s hard to come by these days”. Fellow comedian Sagan Butler added, “He was the light at the end of the tunnel to me”.
A memorial show is scheduled for Saturday, August 30th, at 7 p.m. at Shark’s Comedy Club to honor Cruz’s legacy and raise funds for his family. An online fundraiser has already surpassed $7,500, a testament to the impact Cruz had on those around him.
Dallas police continue to investigate the incident, urging the driver to come forward. As the community grapples with the loss, one message rings clear: Henry Cruz will be remembered not just for his jokes, but for the joy, warmth, and humanity he brought to every room he entered.
Devon Walker, the sharp-witted comedian known for his offbeat charm and incisive sketches, has officially exited Saturday Night Live after three seasons. In a heartfelt and unfiltered Instagram post on August 25, 2025, Walker announced his departure with the caption, “me and baby broke up ❤️,” likening his time on the iconic NBC show to a “little marriage”—fleeting, intense, and ultimately transformative.
Walker joined SNL in 2022 as a featured player during Season 48 and was promoted to the repertory cast for Seasons 49 and 50. His exit marks the first confirmed cast departure ahead of Season 51, which is set to premiere on October 4, 2025.
In a note shared alongside his announcement, Walker reflected on the highs and lows of his tenure: “Sometimes it was really cool. Sometimes it was toxic as hell. But we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction”. He expressed deep gratitude for collaborators Gary and Alex, celebrating their journey from bar shows to 30 Rock as a “beautiful thing”.
Walker’s departure comes amid a broader shake-up at SNL, with longtime producer Lorne Michaels signaling a need to “reinvent” the show following its landmark 50th season. Writers Celeste Yim and Rosebud Baker also announced their exits, citing the grueling nature of the job and the emotional toll of live television.
Looking ahead, Walker revealed plans to travel to Japan and pursue dramatic acting roles—ideally in a prestige drama alongside Julianne Moore. His candid farewell, equal parts humorous and introspective, underscores the evolving landscape of comedy and the personal toll of high-pressure creative environments.
As SNL prepares to usher in new voices and perspectives, Walker’s departure serves as both a closing chapter and a bold pivot toward reinvention—for the show and for the artist himself.

Oscar-winning actress and comedy powerhouse Mo’Nique is stepping into the DC Universe in a bold new way—she’s been cast as the voice of Amanda Waller in the upcoming Lego Batman animated feature, slated for release in 2026. Known for her commanding presence and razor-sharp wit, Mo’Nique brings a fresh, formidable energy to one of DC’s most complex characters.
Amanda Waller, often dubbed “The Wall,” is a high-ranking government official and the ruthless architect behind the Suicide Squad. In the Lego universe, she’s expected to be just as cunning—but with a comedic twist. Mo’Nique’s casting signals a version of Waller that’s equal parts intimidating and hilarious, perfectly suited for the irreverent tone of the Lego Batman franchise.
Producers say Mo’Nique was their top choice for the role, citing her “unmatched vocal gravitas and comedic instincts.” Her performance will blend the character’s no-nonsense leadership with the kind of biting humor fans have come to expect from the Lego films.
The film, currently in production under Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, is a follow-up to the wildly successful Lego Batman Movie (2017), which starred Will Arnett as the brooding yet lovable Caped Crusader. Arnett is set to return, alongside a new ensemble cast that includes:
The story reportedly centers around Waller assembling a Lego version of the Suicide Squad to deal with a rogue AI threatening Gotham’s digital infrastructure—yes, even Lego Gotham has tech problems.
This role marks another major move in Mo’Nique’s recent career resurgence. After earning acclaim for her dramatic work in Precious, she’s returned to comedy with stand-up specials, television roles, and now voice acting. Her casting as Amanda Waller adds a new dimension to her already versatile resume.
Fans are already buzzing online, with many calling it “inspired casting” and “the perfect blend of power and punchlines.”
With Mo’Nique behind the mic, Amanda Waller is about to become one of Lego Gotham’s most unforgettable characters.
Comedy meets cultural celebration in a one-night-only virtual event as George Lopez, Jesse Garcia, and Al Madrigal join an all-immigrant and children-of-immigrants cast for a reimagined table read of the 2007 teen comedy classic Superbad. The event will stream live on Sunday, August 24 at 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET via the Immigrant Defenders Law Center’s official YouTube channel, with proceeds benefiting ImmDef’s Bond Fund to help immigrants in detention reunite with their families.
Alongside Lopez, Garcia, and Madrigal, the cast includes:
The event is created by Gentefied co-creator Marvin Lemus and produced with Gloria Calderón Kellett, showrunner of One Day at a Time and With Love. Both are children of immigrants and say the project is deeply personal.
“Right now, so much of what fills our feeds is pain, fear and uncertainty,” said Calderón Kellett. “We wanted to carve out a little space for joy—to laugh together, to feel community, and to remind people that they are seen, valued, and not alone”.
The original Superbad, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is a coming-of-age comedy that captured a generation. This reimagined reading offers a fresh lens on the story, highlighting the comedic brilliance and lived experiences of immigrant performers. Rogen, Goldberg, and Judd Apatow have voiced their support for the event.
Founded in 2015, ImmDef is one of California’s largest nonprofit providers of deportation defense and immigrant legal services. The table read aims to raise awareness and funds for their Bond Fund, which helps detained immigrants secure release and reunite with loved ones.
“If you wanna help immigrants, tell everyone you know about this live read,” Lemus said. “This is going to be the best live read of a teen comedy ever attempted since the pandemic ended”.
This event blends laughter, legacy, and advocacy—proving that comedy can be a powerful tool for change.
