Netflix’s Kevin Hart-Wesley Snipes Drama Series ‘True Story’ Adds Lauren London, Will Catlett, And More

Sources have stated that Netflix is filling out its cast for True Story, the upcoming limited drama series starring Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes.

The logline: A tour stop in Kid’s  (Hart) hometown of Philadelphia becomes a matter of life and death for one of the world’s most famous comedians when the consequences of a lost evening with his wayward older brother (Snipes) threaten to destroy everything he’s built.

The series has added Tawny Newsome, Will Catlett, Paul Adelstein, Ash Santos, John Ales, Chris Diamantopoulos, Lauren London and Billy Zane.

For the lead characters, Hart (in his dramatic role debut) will play Kid. “After struggling for years to make his mark in the industry, uber-successful comedian and movie star Kid returns to his hometown of Philly to kick-off a huge stand-up tour. When a celebratory night takes an unexpected turn, Kid is forced to find out just how far he’ll go to protect his family and hard earned success.”

Snipes will play Carlton. “The ties of family are strong, but the brotherly relationship between Carlton and Kid is complicated and contentious. When Kid reunites with Carlton in Philly, they become embroiled in a problematic situation that puts their relationship to the test.”

Billie. As a talented comedy writer who works for Kid, Billie is constantly trying to earn respect and recognition for her work, leaving her stuck between loyalty to Kid or pursuing her long-term dreams through other outlets.

Catlett will be Herschel. A man of few words, this jack-of-all-trades bodyguard is a constant presence in Kid’s life. Herschel has a quiet sense of humor and takes the chaos surrounding Kid in stride, but struggles to keep Kid safe once he and his brother Carlton grow closer.

Adelstein is portraying Todd. Kid’s longtime manager, Todd’s years navigating the industry with Kid has made them close like brothers. Todd struggles to find the balance between friend and manager as Kid faces ongoing challenges with his brother, Carlton.

Santos will play Daphne, an outgoing young woman who joins Carlton and Kid at a VIP afterparty that continues to an eventful night.

Ales will be Niiko. Bringing a whole new definition to a close-knit family, Nikos will stop at nothing to make sure his brothers Savvas and Ari are safe.

Diamantopoulos will play Savvas. Part of the same close-knit family that knows no limit, Savvas values the safety and success of his brothers Nikos and Ari over anything.

London is Monyca: Faced with new challenges of co-parenting a child with Kid, Monyca still enjoys a close bond with her ex.

Zane will play Ari. Coldly unfazed by the nature of his job, Ari helps make problems go away.

The series is executive produced by Narcos and Narcos: Mexico showrunner Eric Newman, under his overall Television deal with Netflix. Charles Murray serves as executive producer and is the showrunner. Stephen Williams will direct and executive produce the first four episodes and Hanelle Culpepper will direct the final four episodes.

Craig Robinson, Chris Redd Comedies Join Andy Cohen Unscripted Series At New Peacock Streamer

Peacock is bulking up.

Ahead of its virtual time with press Wednesday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the NBCUniversal-backed streamer added a pair of scripted comedies, an Andy Cohen-produced unscripted series and a pair of totally different docuseries to its slate as the service continues to bolster its offerings. It’s the first slate for the streamer under Susan Rovner, who took over originals for Peacock following NBCUniversal’s massive executive restructuring last year.

Picked up to series are an untitled comedy starring Craig Robinson (formerly known as Killing It) that reunites the actor behind the Pontiac Bandit with Brooklyn Nine-Nine exec producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici and Bust Down, an ensemble comedy from SNL mastermind Lorne Michaels featuring breakout cast member Chris Redd.

On the unscripted side, Watch What Happens Live‘s Cohen will host new series Ex Rated, a social experiment of sorts featuring singles who send exit surveys to find out why relationships went bust. On the docuseries side, Peacock has picked up true crime entry John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise from its NBC News Studios and set a March 25 drop for all six episodes. Joining that will be a three-part doc featuring Olympic swimming great Michael Phelps as Peacock begins its countdown to the Tokyo games.

Rounding out the slate is the announcement that Peacock is revisiting The Real Housewives of Miami, with Cohen and the team behind that hugely successful franchise. The project is currently in the development stage and would return to the location that previously ran for four season son Bravo from 2011-2013.

“Peacock is committed to expanding the breadth and depth of our content and pushing the boundaries of compelling storytelling across genres,” said Rovner, who serves of chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “I am excited to unveil a dynamic slate of new programming that truly offers something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of comedy, reality, true crime or sports.”

Rovner oversees Peacock, NBC, USA Network, Syfy, Bravo, Oxygen and E!, among other NBCU linear networks. She and her team are responsible for all entertainment content across the portfolio. She installed heads of scripted, unscripted, reality and other divisions after joining NBCUniversal from Warner Bros. TV last year.

Peacock had a more subdued launch last year. The platform, which features ad-free and premium tiers, was originally poised to launch alongside the Tokyo Olympics. With the summer games postponed to last year, Peacock had a muted launch as NBCUniversal spent much of the past year focused on its executive restructuring and adding library content. A few scripted series, developed under former Peacock head of originals Bill McGoldrick, launched and were renewed including Saved by the Bell and NBC import A.P. Bio. Up next for Peacock is its Punky Brewster revival.

Here’s more on Peacock’s new additions:

Untitled Craig Robinson comedy: Peacock has ordered 10 episodes of the comedy about class, capitalism and one man’s quest to achieve the American Dream. Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Goor and head writer Luke Del Tredici co-wrote the script and exec produce alongside Robinson. The comedy hails from Universal Television, where Goor is under an overall deal. The series, which was first developed by McGoldrick in July, arrives days after NBC announced that the upcoming eighth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine would be its last and return for an abbreviated run next season. Goor also has new comedy Grand Crew awaiting a premiere date at NBC.

Bust Down comedy: The six-episode ensemble comedy follows four casino employees in a dead-end job in middle America as t hey attempt to find self-worth in their bad ideas. Redd, Sam Jay, Langston Kerman and Jak Knight star. A showrunner has not been named. Michaels exec produces via his Universal TV-based Broadway Video banner alongside Andrew Singer and Hilary Marx. Richie Keen will direct.

Ex Rated reality series: Cohen will host the series that explores adult singles who send exit surveys to all of their previous romantic partners to learn why the relationships didn’t work. The series is based on a new format created and developed by BBC Studios’ L.A. production arm and the U.K.’s Mighty Productions. Eric Pankowski serves as showrunner, Cohen also exec produces.

John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise: The six-part true crime docuseries will launch March 25 and feature a multiple-hour interview with Gacy from prison. Rod Blackhurst, Alexa Danner, Elizabeth Fischer and Tracy Ullman serve as executive producers on the series. Alison True will serve as executive consultant.

Michael Phelps: Medals, Memories & More: The three-part doc, from NBC Sports, features the swimmer taking a look back at his Olympic career. It will launch before the Tokyo O lympics. Each episode will feature a different era in his career.

ESSENCE March+April Triple Cover Features Star-Studded Cast Of ‘Coming 2 America’

Prepare the royal jet! Coming 2 America is finally arriving, with Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and an all-star cast of returning and new faces—including Jermaine Fowler, KiKi Layne and Bella Murphy. It’s been more than three decades since the beloved original Coming to America hit theaters and became a true cult classic that has spanned multiple generations and demographics. Now, in the ESSENCE March/April issue triple cover article, The Fresh Princes of Zamunda, Regina R. Robertson talks to the cast about why this was the right time to do the sequel, their fave moments and what the film means to the culture:

  • EDDIE MURPHY ON WHAT THE FILM MEANS TO THE CULTURE: “Coming to America is one of my films that has really worked its way into the culture. People get dressed up as the characters for Halloween, and they still walk around saying catchphrases like ‘Sexual Chocolate.’ So many people grew up with Coming to America and have a lot invested in it, so I didn’t want to taint that…Once the ideas started coming together, it took about four or five years to get the script all the way right. Once we got it right, I knew it was time…”
  • ARSENIO HALL ON DOING THE SEQUEL: “A lot of people have posted about Coming to America and said things like, ‘Please don’t mess with my movie’ or ‘I don’t want no sequel!’ We’ve been pitched all kinds of ideas, but I remember reading the script in Eddie’s backyard and it was all making sense. That’s when I knew that this was going to be the sequel…”
  • KIKI LAYNE ON PLAYING MEEKA: “Meeka is loyal to her family. I’m interested in showcasing strong Black women— and being a part of this film was an opportunity to play in such a classic world and also to work with straight-up legends, all the way around…”
  • BELLA MURPHY ON PLAYING OMMA AND WORKING WITH HER DAD: “Omma is super-smart, a little bit of a badass, and she’s super-cool. Being able to do my first film with my dad is really special…I’m over the moon…”
  • JERMAINE ON PLAYING LAVELLE—AND WATCHING HIS DREAM COME TRUE: “In some ways, Lavelle reminds me a lot of myself when I was growing up and trying to figure out life. As a fan of the original film, I was honored to be a part of this whole world—but when they told me how Lavelle becomes part of the story, I just laughed my ass off and thought, All right, let’s do it…”
  • SHARI HEADLEY ON WHAT AUDIENCES WILL LOVE: “I’m as excited as the audience and have no doubt that this will be a film that people will love. I’ll venture to say they’ll love it even more than the first one…”
  • WESLEY SNIPES ON JOINING THE FILM: “I was like, ‘Whatever the role is, I want to be in it.’ Later, I was told that I was going to be a General—but really, I could have played a zebra and been just fine…”

WATCH: Disney Releases New Trailer For ‘Cruella’ Starring Emma Stone

Brilliant, bad, and a little bit mad, is Disney’s catchy description for that legendary wearer of fur Cruella de Vil in this new trailer for Cruella, the live-action backstory to the villainess first introduced in 1961’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Starring Emma Stone in the title role, Disney’s Cruella, the studio says, is “about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil.” Set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, the film follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.

One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. Their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. It was produced by Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt and Kristin Burr, with Emma Stone, Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff and Glenn Close serving as executive producers. Costume designer is Jenny Beavan.

The Walt Disney Company releases Cruella on May 28th.

Quinta Brunson has set up a single-camera comedy pilot at ABC which she will star in in addition to writing and executive producing.

The project is titled “Harrity Elementary.” Per the official description, it is a workplace comedy about a group of teachers brought together in one of the worst public schools in the country, simply because they love teaching. The teachers will rely on each other to make it through the day, and find a way to counteract the school district’s bullsh-t attitude toward educating children.

Justin Halpen and Patrick Schumacker will also executive produce the pilot via Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions. 20th Television and Warner Bros. Television will co-produce. Halpern and Schumacker are currently under an overall deal at WBTV.

Brunson scored a pilot production commitment in 2018 alongside Jermaine Fowler and Larry Wilmore for a multi-cam comedy in which she and Fowler were to star. Her recent onscreen credits include “Big Mouth,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “iZombie,” and “Lazor Wulf.” She got her start with the Instagram series “Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date” before she went on to work with Buzzfeed. She also led her own Facebook Watch series, “Quinta vs. Everything.”

Brunson is repped by ICM, Authentic Talent & Literary Management, and Del Shaw Moonves.

They did work with her on the CW pilot “The End of the World as We Know It” in 2018. The pair currently have the critically-acclaimed adult animated series “Harley Quinn” at HBO Max. They previously co-created the show “$#*! My Dad Says” and worked together on others like “Cougar Town” and “Powerless.”

They are repped by ICM.

Breakout Star Of ‘Bridgerton’ Rege-Jean Page To Star in New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’

Page has set his next project after breaking-out as the star of Netflix’s hit.
Regé-Jean Page has set his next project after breaking-out as the star of Netflix’s smash hit Bridgerton.

Page has closed a deal for a leading role in Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons feature, joining a cast that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind New Line’s sleeper hit Game Night — are set to direct the feature based on the popular fantasy role-playing game from Wizards on the Coast. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the latest version of the script based on a previous draft by Michael Gilio.

The game of Dungeons & Dragons is known for its war games, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs and hundreds of other creatures. The game famously uses multisided dice in gameplay and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master. It is not known whether the movie adaptation will be a straight-up fantasy film, set in the world of the game, or incorporate the storytelling and game-playing aspects.

Jeremy Latcham is producing through his deal with studio eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner is also producing.  Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are jointly producing and financing, with eOne distributing in the U.K. and Canada, and Paramount distributing rest of world.

Page, who is set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend, starred as the beloved Duke of Hastings in the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama that, according to the streamer, was watched by more than 82 million accounts in its first month, making it the service’s biggest series ever. His previous feature credits include Mortal Engines and period romance Sylvie’s Love.

Page is repped by CAA, the U.K.’s Artists Partnership, and Ziffren Brittenham.
