Kevin Hart & Ice Cube's 'Ride Along' Conquers 2nd Straight Week At The Box Office!

Posted Jan 28, 2014

In 1988, he was in the rap group NWA which antagonized cops and even wrote a protest song to criticize their local police force.

But it looks like Ice Cube is finding success more than 25 years later by actually portraying one of the boys in blue himself.

The 44-year-old actor and comedian Kevin Hart star in Ride Along which took the number one spot at the US box office for the second straight week.

The buddy cop comedy took in $21.2m gross in its second weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday, after setting a January debut record of $48.6m over the previous three-day holiday weekend.

Ride Along: Kevin Hart plays Ben, who joins his cop brother-in-law James Payton, played by Ice Cube, on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta to prove he is worthy of marrying Jame’s sister

According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite declining 49 percent in its second weekend which is less than expected, it still pushed the comedy’s domestic total to $75.4m.

The film features a security guard named Ben Barber (played by Hart) who joins his cop brother-in-law James Payton (Ice Cube) on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta to prove that he’s worthy of marrying Jame’s sister Angela.

Coming in second at the box office was war film Lone Survivor, which earned $12.6m in its fifth week bringing it to a cumulative total of $93.6m.

Both the movies atop the box office were also Universal films for the second week in a row.

The top three was rounded out by the Will Arnett-voiced film The Nut Job, bringing in $12.3m.

One flick which was a bit of a disappointment was I, Frankenstein starring Aaron Eckhart as it only brought in a lowly $8.3 million on its opening weekend.

The movie came in sixth at the box office and had an ample budget at $65m.

However, it was still able to muster up $13m in overseas box office.

Ride Along will try for its third straight week atop charts as they compete against Zac Efron romantic comedy That Awkward Moment and Labor Day starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, which will both be released next week.
