The American Music Awards paid tribute to “Star Wars” on Sunday night, debuting a new scene from the hotly-anticipated sequel “The Force Awakens” before actor Harrison Ford introduced a capella group Pentatonix for a special performance.
“Many of you know composer John Williams’ name, but one thing’s for sure, all movie fans know his music,” Ford said, before clips played of the composer’s most iconic themes, including music from “Jaws,” “E.T.,” Ford’s own “Indiana Jones” franchise, and finally, “the most famous of all,” Williams’ score for “Star Wars.”
Ford then introduced Pentatonix, promising that fans would get to hear the theme “in a way you’ve never heard before.”
The fivesome — clad in Jedi-appropriate gear — kicked off an a capella rendition of John Williams’ iconic score, starting with Darth Vader’s Imperial March, before a full symphony orchestra joined in, with the music set against a backdrop of footage from the beloved film franchise.
The new clip was an extended look at a scene we’ve previously seen in trailers, showing Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and BB-8 fleeing from TIE Fighters who are firing at them and destroying everything in their wake on Jakku.
