Sherri Shepherd And Kym Whitley To Host Multicultural Media Correspondents Dinner

Posted Jun 25, 2019
WASHINGTON, DC –The Multicultural Media Correspondents Association (MMCA), an advocacy organization leading a national call to action to increase media diversity, announced today that Tom Joyner, Congresswoman Val Demings (D-FL), Eun Yang, and Parker Morse will be among the honorees for the 4th Annual Multicultural Media Correspondents Dinner (MMCDTM) #MMCD, which will again be held at the National Press Club on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

The MMCDTM is an exclusive, invitation-only gala attended by media influencers, policymakers, executives, corporate and advocacy organization allies and Hollywood VIPs to honor media industry legends and luminaries of color such as Tom Joyner, aka “The Fly Jock.”

“I am truly grateful for this honor and your support over the years. As the hardest working man in radio, I’ve tried to do my best to party with a purpose. Now, more than ever, we need to make sure we tell our stories,” said Tom Joyner.

The evening also underscores the ongoing fight for greater media diversity and inclusion. Actresses and comedians Sherri Shepherd and Kym Whitley will host the festivities with their unique brand of topical humor.

“With the MMCDTM, our vision of a powerful, collective, inclusive and sustained effort to honor diverse journalists and other media luminaries and to help move the needle on media diversity is now a reality. We are beyond thrilled with the level of engagement and support the dinner has received in just its fourth year,” said David Morgan, MMCA President.

Partners and sponsors are vocally championing the MMCDTM and pledging their continued support.

“The Multicultural Media Correspondents Association Dinner and Symposium are the only events in Washington DC which bring together media stakeholders, government officials and influencers to not only celebrate Diversity in media, but also to have a genuinely bipartisan, multicultural and intergenerational discussion about how public policy can increase diverse representation in media. Comcast NBCUniversal is proud to partner with the MMCA in this effort,” said Antonio “Tony” Williams, Executive Director, Comcast NBCUniversal.

Following the awards gala, on July 10, MMCA will continue the inclusion and representation conversation with its inaugural Media Diversity Innovation Summit at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Congresswoman Val Demings (D-FL), Chair of the Media Diversity Congressional Braintrust, is honorary host.

The Summit, entitled “Taking Control of the Media Diversity Crisis,” is designed to unearth common ground solutions that policy makers and industry leaders can support and scale to increase opportunities for people of color to profitably create, own, control and distribute media content – news, entertainment and advertising. The Summit will include fireside chats and panel discussions featuring studio and network executives, news organization executives, prominent producers of color, multicultural broadcasters, and new media platform owners. Confirmed speakers and panelists include Robert J. Brown, Dr. Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. Dorothy Gilliam, Helen Zia, Erika Alexander, L. Londell McMillan, Jeff Yang, DuJuan McCoy, Tim Hwang, Tirrell D. Whitley, and Carla Santiago.

The Summit will conclude with a reception honoring journalists and members of Congress of color at the Capitol View at 400. This seminal gathering will feature a performance by Beat Global and VIP book signing by luminaries Dorothy Butler Gilliam, Robert J. Brown, and Helen Zia.

MMCA’s event partners include: DC Office of Cable Television, Film, Music & Entertainment (OCTFME), National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), National Newspaper Publishers Associations (NNPA), Asian American Journalist Association (AAJA), National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB), National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), Multicultural Media Telecom and Internet Coalition (MMTC), Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) and ALLvanza.
