Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit Entertainment partner Shakim Compere are producing and financing the project, which is based on story co-written by Epps.

Mike Epps and Tip “T.I.” Harris are teaming up to star in The Trap, an indie comedy to be directed by Chris Robinson.

Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit Entertainment partner Shakim Compere are producing with Epps and and his partner at Naptown Productions, Niles Kirchner. Harris will also produce under his Grand Hustle Films banner with his producing partner Brian Sher.

The project is based on a story that Epps concocted with Nile Evans, with Evans writing the script.

Trap tells of a man (T.I.) who returns to home Atlanta after an extended abscence to help save his brother (Epps) and mother’s run-down chicken shack restaurant. An unexpected change to the chicken recipe lays new life into the restaurant but also brings in unexpected problems.

A fall start is being eyed. Jesse Collins will executive produce.

The project is the first time Epps, who recently starred in the Uncle Buck television show, will be working with T.I. On the flip side, Trap reunites the rapper-turned-actor with Robinson, who directed him in his acting debut, 2006’s ATL.

Epps, repped by CAA and Morris Yorn, will portray Richard Pryor in the biopic of the comedian. The Weinstein Co. project is due to begin shooting in 2017.

T.I., repped by UTA and Category 5 Entertainment, appeared in Get Hard as well as Ant-Man.

Robinson is the acclaimed music video director who is in post on BET’s feature New Edition: The Movie, centering on the 1980s boy band. He is repped by CAA and Principato-Young Entertainment.

Flavor Unit has produced features such as Bringing Down the House and Beauty Shop, while for the small screen, their credits include Bessie and Dear Mama, among others. Dear Mama, produced for VH1, has recently been renewed as an annual special.
