‘Girls Trip’ Cast Discuss Women In Comedy At Universal CinemaCon Panel

Posted Mar 29, 2017

Universal recently took to the stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, featuring a host of their films with celebrity panels. Natalie Morales, who hosted the presentation, noted that that Universal has had plenty of talented comedic women star in its films, and introduced a sizzle reel that included clips from the studio’s hits Bridesmaids, Trainwreck and Sisters.

Director Malcolm D. Lee, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish and Jada Pinkett Smith took on a session in promotion for their comedy film, Girls Trip. Per Deadline, Morales asked about females in comedy and Latifah responded, “Women really do let loose and have a good time, sometimes a lot more raucous than you think. So it was fun to play as actors something this juicy that you can sink your teeth into.” Lee’s response when it comes to shooting women instead of men? “Not a lot of difference … maybe just a little bit more time in make-up, just a little bit.”

The comedy about a group of friends who — go on a road trip to the annual Essence Festival — marks the first time that Latifah and Pinkett-Smith have been on-screen together since 1996’s Set It Off. The four stars admitted that they have plenty of fun on set in New Orleans, which was really shot during Essence Fest even though most didn’t know each other before the film.

“I felt like I was on the black Curb Your Enthusiasm,” said Haddish of the comedic improv on set.

Per THR, the session also included a new trailer featuring a hilariously raunchy scene in which Pinkett Smith’s character gets stuck on a zip line over a crowded New Orleans street, and can’t hold her bladder anymore.

Girls Trip opens on July 21, 2017.
