An ‘Original Kings Of Comedy’ Biopic In The Works!

Posted Nov 10, 2015

When The Original Kings of Comedy hit theaters nationwide in August of 2000 no one could’ve predicted that it would do what it eventually did for the careers of Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer and the late Bernie Mac.

That is, no one except Walter Latham, the force behind the groundbreaking and critically acclaimed concert film shot over two nights at the Charlotte Coliseum in North Carolina during the Kings of Comedy Tour.

And while most of the country had their first taste of these four now iconic names in comedy in 2000, the truth is Harvey, Hughley, Cedric and Mac were toiling away on the road and in clubs for 15 years before Latham and director Spike Lee made household names of them.

Now, Laughspin hears that those times before The Original Kings of Comedy are set to become the subject of a new biopic. Sources say the reality of a film about the lives and careers of Harvey, Hughley, Cedric and Mac leading up to those fateful nights in North Carolina is inching closer. “A film about what led up to The Original Kings of Comedy is absolutely happening,” one insider says.

The details are sparse for now though hopefully we’ll be able to report more about the film in the coming weeks. What we do know is that based on the staying power of all four comics’ material – and that’s including Mac, who most certainly lives on through his television show, stand-up specials and movies – and the lasting influence The Original Kings of Comedy has in the world of comedy and in pop culture in general, it would be easy to see such a project becoming hugely successful.
